3D Printer Models

I'm still looking around to find any threads about creating 3d models for printing on 3d printers. My son has gone leaps and bounds beyond me in this. I know they use a lot of other softwares to create these, but isn't it just as well to create them in the "reigning" King of CAD, AutoCAD. Or am I missing something here?

I have 3d Printed some stuff, one funny object was a pin for a Lego model it was missing, I made a Christmas ornament, it has the childs name on it. You make a solid then use STLOUT.

Any problems with "loose ends"? That was my sons complaint, but I would attribute that to user error, not checking before sending out the print file.
