Linking within a drawing?

Recommended Posts

I am currently doing a drawings and it has become 5 parts.

what i mean by that is, i have the same drawing but its a step by step so part1 then becomes 2, 3, 4 and 5 each with things changed

but the basic base drawing is the same. all this is in a single DWG

I would have used an XREF if i had known, but even so can you have 5 instances of an XREF in the same drawing?

The problem i am having is the boss wanted some changes today and i had to change all 5 parts.
Is there a way to link them so when i change the base drawing it updates the other 4.

i hope that makes sense.

Update:

I've come in this morning and with a fresh brain come up with a workaround.

I made the drawing a "block" meaning I can make several copies of it, any edits change every instance.

it will work for now.

As we can use viewport overrides to control visibility, color, lineweight and linetype of layers in each viewport you should be able to do all of that with only one insertion.

Decades ago I had to insert a drawing, rename the insertion, then reinsert the drawing to have multiple insertions of the same drawing to accomplish this task.

Can you use layouts ? Then can have only 1 master dwg and variations done by VPlayer in each viewport.
