Laptop configuration - sanity check

Hi all,

I’m in need of a new laptop to run Autocad, Revit, Adobe suite and occasionally Lumion.
Unfortunately my current circumstances don’t allow me to have a desktop workstation, hence the laptop.

I’m a professional and I use revit daily for landscape projects. Generally the models are around 200/300mb in size and gets larger (a lot) with the external links (architectural / MEP / structure) that I need to keep on.

I’ve been advised to buy a laptop with the following specs:

Intel® Core™ i9-14900HX - 24 CORE (4.1GHz, 5.90GHz Turbo)

NVIDIA® GeForce™ RTX 4080 GPU 12GB GDDR6 - TDP 150W

2 x 32GB Ram Kingston Fury Impact SO DIMM – DDR5 CL40 5600MHZ

2TB SSD Samsung 990 Pro

It ain’t cheap and I wonder if it’s a good configuration that ensures longevity or is an overkill and I can downsize something.

I know autocad can run on a smartphone basically, my only worry is revit - I don’t really want spending precious time looking at the blue wheel of death everytime I work on a model…

I scoured the web to collect as many information as possible in order to make an educated decision, but the more I looked the more I’ve got confused with the vast range of CPUs and graphic cards available on the market.
I’m now very indecisive with even more doubts.

I really need some advice.. thank you!

You're right about Autocad, it doesn't take much to run it. I don't know anything about Revit, but if you're going to be using Lumion, you're going to need a lot of RAM and graphics and processing power, so I think the specs you listed should be pretty good.

Check out the Lumion minimum, recommended and high-end system requirements here: https://lumion.com/product/system-requirements

I've been using Revit since the mid-2000's and I'm a computer guy. While those specs are nice, it's not required for day to day Revit'ing or even Lumion. We are all running 12th and 13th gen i5's (some i7's) with RXT 3060 cards with 64GB RAM and we have zero issues, in fact we are well pleased with the specs of these machines (1-2yr old now). You can go with a $1k to $1500 laptop with a solid 13th gen i7, 4000 series RTX and a fast Nvme drive (I do encourage 64GB RAM though) and you'll be more than fine, honestly.
