Editing an ESRI SHP File in Map 3D 2009

I thought this process would be easy when I started. I have connected to data in ACAD Map 3D 2009. I can then modify the objects in the data, by moving, stretching, erasing, etc. Everything looks good but later when I look at the shape file in ArcView, FME Viewer, or some other program, every where I modified a line now shows the original as well as the one I changed. Is there a setting in ACAD that says when you modify an object, that it wll make a copy and keep or delete the original.

I have included a screen cap of the issue if it helps. The red lines are the original, the green is where I moved them.

Thanx for any help, I am not new to ACAD but have just started working with connecting to external data.
