How do I change to work from millimetres to inches??

-DWGUNITS, set up a template or use a default Imperial template.

 

If you just need to change the dimensions, set up an Imperial Dimension Style or add alternate units.

AutoCAD comes supplied with both an Imperial and a Metric drawing template (.dwt).  They are named, in order, acad.dwt and acadiso.dwt.  That's your starting point.
