Tiger Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Hi! It's been a while since I was here last, but the last few days I have encountered a problem that I have no idea why or how. I have two computers with Civil 3D 2021 installed - but I am fairly sure this is AutoCADs doing anyway - and they get the very common "Missing SHX-files"-error. But here is the quirk, it comes up on the commandline when saving the file. I am used to the dialog coming up when you open the file and then you can (though I don't recommend it) ignore the error. But on the commandline there is no choice to ignore it so it keeps coming back - and it takes a lot of time for the file to Save because of this error. The solution I have is to find the SHX-files, but it bugs me that I can't figure out why the error would suddenly show up on the commandline? So I wanted to ask the greatest hive mind I know - has anyone seen this before? Do you know what could cause it? Quote
tombu Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 You could add that SHX file to a folder in your Support Path. Personally I haven't used shape fonts in over 20 years and only use the TrueType fonts installed by Windows and AutoCAD so my drawings can be opened by anyone. Quote

Yeah, no matter what I need to find and add that SHX-file. Most users in Sweden still use SHX-files, it would be real nice if we didn't need them but that is where we are. But my question really is about getting the question on the commandline - it has never showed up on the commandline when saving before. I am wondering if there can be something in the drawing that is accessing the SHX-file in another way? In my experience SHX-files are fonts or linetype-shapes - anyone know if they can be used for something eles? Quote
tombu Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 SHP files from GIS software can also be imported into Map 3D verticals like Civil 3D. That extension is widely used. What's the size of the file? I'd save as a junk file, delete everything, save and reopen. If it's still there it's probably a linetype definition. Remove them saving as junk1, junk2, etc until it goes away to find the one causing the trouble. You could save the drawing as a DXF file and open it with an ASCII editor and search for that SHX file to see what it's used for if you're familiar with them. Could you paths have changed? Was this after an upgrade? Quote
Tiger Posted May 21, 2021 Author Posted May 21, 2021 You are saying a SHP-file can reference a SHX-file? i'll have to see if the user has used any SHP-files. The DXF-method is a useful one, thank you for that! But to be clear, the actual missing SHX-file I know how to deal with. What confuses me is that I get the error message on the commandline when saving the file. I haven't seen that behaviour in any version I have worked with - Missing-SHX-errors have always been thrown up when opening the file as far as I know. Quote
tombu Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 Sorry that was a typo I was referring to SHX files from GIS. Options → System tab → [Hidden Messages Settings] button and uncheck 'Missing SHX Files'. Quote
