I seem to remember that 30 years ago, when pen plotters were much more common, the TrueType fonts involved a lot of pen movement to fill in the fonts when plotting, so SHX fonts were preferred.

 

But time passes and now printers can cope easily with TrueType fonts.

Never had an issue using fonts like AutoCAD's Swiss Lt BT and still rarely use bold fonts, drove me crazy when someone plotted linework that had improperly scaled linetypes though, the 300 pen-ups & downs to draw a single line gave me an excuse to go for a walk.
