I was given the attached file some time ago which allows you to edit the polyline and when you REGEN it recalculates the area and updates the text. Firstly does anyone have a similar thing that gives the length of a polyline and secondly does could someone explain how this works?

That is a FIELD. FIELDs can be inserted into TEXT, MTEXT and other objects and they will populate with some referenced property. In this case it's set to the AREA of a selected polyline.

 

To edit that to the length

  • Go into text/mtext edit mode.
  • Then select the Field, right-click and choose "Edit Field".
  • A dialog will appear. Change the property to Length.
