Valve Placement - Pressure pipe network

Just curious if anyone has any slick idea how to place valves in a pressure pipe network?  It is just irritating how it breaks the pipe and I end up with a little 1' section of pipe... it is a hassle to get the pipe, valve, and fitting to look proper in a profile.

 

Curious how everyone else does it.
