Layers in 3DS Max- Issues with imported files - help required

Hi Everyone,

I'm coming back to using max after a 7 year hiatus and using max 2018.

I import Step files or inventor files into max and they seem to be split into multiple layers/objects( when I look at the layer manager as attached below).

However whenever I try to click on the actual object it comes up as one part as shown below.

My main problem is that I need to be able to get the item as one object before I can export it to the final destination program which we use at my company.

I have converted the file to edit poly then click on the attached list window, but the file just shows up one layer so can't seem to attach the files all together.

So I guess to summarise- file is coming into max as multiple parts but I can't seem to select individually.

I have converted the file to edit poly then click on the attached list window, but the file just shows up one layer so ican't seem to attach the files all together.

Any advice?

So, you need everything to be one object? Moving everything to one layer won't make them one object. They will be a bunch of objects on one layer.

Can you explain in more detail exactly what you're trying to do? Also, what program will you be taking this into? Why can't you import the files directly instead of going through Studio Max?
