luther4000 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Hi, I am having a problem when i try to get close to an object, the object gets cut by the viewport somehow. I tried to copy everything in a new model, restart SketchuP, restart the computer, nothing is solving it. Anyone has an idea?? see the pictures and how the corner I am trying to edit gets cut when i get close to it. Quote
CALCAD Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I have seen this. It is as if there is a clipping plane that comes from nowhere. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution. So far, this has only happened to me with small models and didn't cause much trouble. I just rotated the entire model to get where I needed to go. I have not heard this mentioned anywhere else. I hope someone has more information on this. Quote
CALCAD Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 No, simply zooming in or out won't affect the phantom clipping plane, once it has made it's presence known. It IS affected by changing the view point by using pre-defined views, orbit or camera position. It is also affected by moving or rotating the model relative to the axes. I can't exactly cause the clipping plane to appear at will, but I have seen it after vigorous application of the orbit function. I have attached a part file that displays the clipping effect. For the curious, after loading the file, try carefully orbiting around and you can get a sense of just where in space the plane is. There is nothing special about the geometry - I have seen the plane appear with a variety of models. I am using the free version of SketchUp 7. test_cut_plane_1-27.ZIP Quote
boofredlay Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Yes the dreaded clipping plane. Here is the Google page explaining it and giving some suggestions on how to minimize it. http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=36261&topic=13710 Quote
CALCAD Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 boofredlay, thanks for the link. There are ways to manipulate the model to get rid of the clipping plane, but a better plan would be to fix the code! Well, since I'm using the free version, I'd better shut up now. By the way, michaeloureiro is right about 'zoom all', sometimes. It seems to depend on how the clipping plane is produced. I have noticed that if the plane shows up after using 'look around', the 'zoom all' will get rid of the plane. Quote

Thanks for posting that - some useful things in there - it's a problem that's been anooying me since I first started using it. Agree they should just fix the code though. S Quote
