I think a knowledgeable user could convert the object pictured in sample.dwg from 2D to 3D.  Just not sure it would be 100% of the object.  I'm guessing one or more members of this forum might try their hand at it in which case you'll know fairly quickly.

For a first timer, I would recommend picking something less complicated. Start out learning how to create a simple nut and bolt. I know there's nothing glamorous about nuts and bolts, but you really should start with easier projects. If you dive head first into something too complicated, you're more likely to get frustrated and give up. If you learn how to do simple stuff then it's much easier to move on to more complicated projects.

There's at least a shred of logic to that theory.  I came across a book over the weekend.  Something to the effect of "AutoCAD 3d Modeling Exercise Workbook".  It had a lot of step by step exercises for beginners.  Going to see if I can find a pdf version and do a bit of practicing that way.  Otherwise, you're probably right, lack of knowledge + over complication = frustration.

Jim, beings that AutoCAD is approaching four decades in existence, and is the most widely used and common CAD application to date collectively, there is no lack of content available. Check out YouTube, there's hundreds to thousands of great videos of users modeling while voicing over, explaining their process. 

 

A simple search yielded many results, most of which are probably very usable:

The core engine that makes AutoCAD run hasn't changed much so most if not all exercises should translate easily.
