I'm new to the forum and fairly new to Autocad. I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere I can get templates for page borders and title blocks. I have searched with no luck. I've tried using the supplied from Autocad, but everytime I use them I have to change so many settings it's just not worth it. Generally I'm drawing 2D parts for shop drawings at our sheet metal shop. Just want to add that little touch of job name, etc.

I'm also in the process of creating my own custom templates if anyone has any tips or tricks.

You're better off creating your own title block and border template file, from scratch, than "borrowing" from that of someone else. In one of the classes I took creating a custom title block and border was the subject of an entire class. At the end of the four hour class we had to have come up with four different versions. It wasn't that difficult.

Make sure you draw it full size in inches or mm and in a layout, this will make plotting so much easier using a viewport. You may want to make say 3 titles eg metric A4 A3 & A1. Dont forget your printer has hard clip margins our A3 on a laser printer the clip limits are around 5mm. So a title block 408X285 will work.

If your new to AutoCAD then creating your own title block is most definitely the first thing you should do. Knowing how to create in model space is one thing but being able to present what you created is just as important. Pick a sheet size and stick with it as much as you can. There are some tutorials here that can help you out.

I just have a regular printer so I'm printing on letter or legal. Generally legal. I normally don't have to do anything to complex, just use it mainly to produce shop drawings for sheet metal or importing it into our plasma table program via .dxf. When needed I'll draw something 3D for a customer to get a better idea on what they are getting. Typically I switch to inventor for that though. Inventor is just troublesome when it comes to converting it to the a file that is acceptable to our Vulcan software.

You want to make the Title Blocks to the sheet sizes that you use to send out to the clients.

So if you do Plan Views you would probably used ARCH E, ARCH D, ARCH C and ARCH B. depending on your Plan View size. This is what we do.

If you get your blocks done and they should take up one end of the ARCH D then you can stretch it to fit the ARCH E or leave it that size and it doesn't take up the complete end of the page.

When you print you change the size to fit which page size you are printing to by selecting "Fit to Page"

Do a quick search of Google with "AutoCAD Title Block Tutorial" and it will pull up a page or 2 of links to use.

Save these as Templates for use when starting a drawing.

by selecting "Fit to Page"

Not a good tip. Creates all sorts of problems, use the fit to work out a correct scale.

The work I do our client doesn't use the drawing at scale. They use the dimensions that we put in the drawing.

So we are looking at giving them the largest print possible. We do issue drawings back to Architects to modify or for their use in the field

That is why we would use the "Fit to Page", using the actual scale most of the time leaves a lot of empty space.

Is there any issue with doing it like that? Does it cause problems somewhere that we are not seeing? No one has *****ed about it. But that doesn't mean much.

Let me claify something I may of not processed, when I am working with full size sheets (ARCH E-B) then everything is scaled, ALLWAYS. Now when I print it out on a smaller page (Letter/11"x 17") or a portion of a page is when I use the "Fit to Page"

As others have suggested I would create my own. I know many that have to work with other peoples standards/templates and its an annoyance so you have a unique opportunity of sorts.

Id say consider two things. Who is going to use the document and how long will document be of use. Ask the guys in the shop what they need and want to see in the title block: BOM, job number, signoff etc etc.. Secondly, consider the life this will live as it sits in a drawer as a file. If you come back to in it 50 years what do you think you might need from it: Physical address, client address etc.. Past that, just slap a frame on it.

Depending on your workflow fields and attributes are an extremely useful thing in the title block. Ive seen some systems that have a file date and location tag on the title block as well and they use this as a means of version control.

Id suggest putting one together and dropping it off here. Im sure there are plenty that can give you good feedback on your layout.
