As I work on mainly 2d landscape plans I have limited skills in the 3d world. However some projects require it. So question:

How do I subtract objects and keep both left over parts? I.e. I have a timber post for a deck with a bearer morticed into it. If I select post as first object and then bearer it subtracts the area to be morticed but also the bearer leaving me with a nicely morticed post only.

Any help appreciated - I'm sure it's an easy one..

Simplest way copy before subtract do ortho on F8 copy pick bearer, pick any point drag mouse enter 200 then subtract then move pick bearer drag mouse back enter 200.

You don't have to move the copied object. It can occupy the same space as the original. Once you perform the subtraction, the copied object will disappear and the original will still remain. That should at least cut out a few steps. Just make a copy of the bearer, snap it to the original, run the subtraction command and you're done.

Use the INTERFERE command, un-check the box to delete the Interference object(s) so the Interference objects are created as new objects in the drawing, then SUBTRACT the Interference objects. In the animation below, I move the objects into position and then move them back out of the way to demonstrate the result, but in reality you do everything in place... pretty fast.

But if you have $3 to spare, TRIMSPLIT from the Autodesk Exchange App store is the perfect solution.
