Hi,

 

Is there a way to quickly identity a material on a solid's face? Is there a way to turn mesh (MAX files converted to DXF) back to solid?

Look on your Properties palette under 3D Visualization or do a LIST on the object.

 

If the conversion will be done in AutoCAD then try using MESHSMOOTH followed by CONVTOSOLID.
