doncarlos Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Hi, I'm new in inventor but have previous knowledge from autoCAD and 3ds max. I try to model a wheel on a track (both are cylindrical surfaces) but I can't figure out how can I constrain together the two. Here is a pic what I have now: What should I do to make it work like a real wheel on track? Thanks in advance! dc Quote
JD Mather Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Mate origin center line Planes and Tangent. Attach your assembly here if you can't figure it out. A step beyond that is Rotation/Translation constraint and a step beyond that is Rolling cylinder on plane Dynamic Simulation joint. Quote
doncarlos Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Thank You for your reply! Here is what I have now: I applied the two mate constraints, the center lines and planes, and if I move back and forward it follows the rail, but if I try the tangent constraint I get an error: "The assembly cannot be solved." Also if I try to offset the mate constraint it moves left not upwards. Quote
JD Mather Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Attach your assembly here if you can't figure it out. (only need the two parts that contact, the cylinder and the wheel) It sounds to me like all you need to do is add an offset distance to one of the constraints the radius of the cylinder. Quote
doncarlos Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 I attach the two parts and thanks for the help. I tried to add an offset to the constraints but the wheel moved to the wrong way (left instead of up). 19mm rail.ipt wheel.ipt Update: For as a last idea I added the same amount of offset for both of the constraints (axis and plane) and it worked. Now it follows the rail with the correct height. For the next step, could it be rotated when it moves? Quote
