Cad64
Sorry ReMark and Cad64. I do appreciate your help indeed. This can is gonna make me crazy ... That's why I stopped using Autocad and switched to Studio Max many years ago. It wasn't worth my time and frustration trying to figure out how to do such a simple thing in Autocad when I could do it in Max with very minimal effort. Good luck with this, and be sure to post a render if you ever get it figured out. Nice Tabasco render by the way.
manumzo
I apologize if I have not been completely helpful but this is not the sort of thing I do day in and day out. My work consists mainly of creating/editing process piping and instrumentation diagrams for a chemical company. Any 3D work I do is for fabricating tanks, stairs, platforms, supports and building framework. In my company there is no need to apply materials, light and render 3D drawings. That's considered unnecessary. So when a problem like yours comes along I am even less qualified than you to come up with a viable solution but at least I give it a good shot. Your posted images are far, far better than anything I could ever do which still makes me wonder why on earth you would continue to want to do this soda can label in AutoCAD when it could be done so much easier in 3ds Max. I guess that's my real hang up here as I just don't understand your thinking. But hey, I've tackled some tough problems too just for the privilege of saying "I did that!" so if that is what this whole exercise is about then go for it. More power to you. I hope you are successful. I 'll try to explain (sorry again for my english) I work on a project for the "PERRIER" (sparkling water) Company. I have to make a presentation of a paletizer. I only have autocad to do this in the company. I'd prefer to do this on MAX of course but I don't have the choice. I wanted to show the boxes of cans on the machine. And of course the cans with the label on them. It's a new product so i don't want to show the real label on the internet. (that's why I posted a coca cola can, but the work is the same) And You are just right : I want to say " I did it" ! because i m sure it's possible. I just don't want to give up ... Of course, I'm not completly crazy, I 'll don't spend the rest of my life to do it. The pictures I've posted are made at home for fun ... Sorry again guys to have been rude with you and the site. Be sure I'm glad of your concern. I'll post the Autocad file and the label after if you have the time to take a look ... I'll post the machine I'm working on too. ReMark
There is no need to apologize any further. Let's move on. I've told you what I am willing to do; should you wish to take me up on the offer that's fine. If not that's fine too. No offense will be taken. There is always the chance that another forum member who uses AutoCAD and is more experienced at this type of thing will come along, see your thread, and solve the problem. That's alright too. The more "eyes" we have on the problem the quicker we can arrive at a solution. Agreed?
manumzo
Of course I agree. And grateful for your offer. Here is the files, the label and the DWG. Don't spend your time with that thing... Enjoy snowballs ... Seriously ? snowstorm this weekend ? Coca-cola can.dwg
ReMark
I was just going to close up shop for the night when I saw your post. Thank you for sharing your files. Yes, a snowstorm. Small one. 4-8 inches of snow is predicted. That's like 100-200 millimeters right? It will be our first significant snowfall here in Connecticut (east coast of the U.S.). I live in the central part of the state about a 2 hour car ride outside of New York city.
manumzo
Yes, that's right 100-200 millimeters. Lucky you are, it almost never snow around here. I live in the south of France, near a town called Nîmes. I located Norwalk, CT on google Maps. I dream to come see New York and the rest of the U.S. Maybe one day ... So, have a nice snowy weekend. ReMark
I see you were busy after I logged off last night. Thanks for the additional information. After doing some errands this morning (Saturday) I might have a chance to download your files and take a shot at wrapping the label.
ReMark
How does this image look? It's a first for me in a number of ways. Now for confession time. I did it using AutoCAD 2010 because I failed upon my first attempt to do it in 2013. Both programs work quite differently and if it wasn't for David Cohen's video I might have gotten totally lost on where to find what I needed and what to do. Would you like a copy of the drawing? In the meantime, after I have fortified myself with some lunch, I will attempt to duplicate the feat using 2013. BTW...the snow, which started early this morning (around 5:30 a.m.) is slowly but steadily coming down outside my office window. The weather reports say we won't see a heavier snowfall until this evening lasting perhaps into late morning on Sunday. I hope your weather is better. I hate winter. manumzo
You're the best ! Yes ! yes ! yes ! I want a copy of the DWG ! You did it with Autocad 2010. I just don"t understand why they have broken this feat in the 2011 - 2012 - 2013 and 2014 versions (I tried the last one version too without success...) Incredible. And no one noticed it, and complain about this ?... I have a contact at Autodesk. I'll ask him the question. I' m very grateful for your help and interest, you are "The best free help for Autocad on the web" indeed ! I'm always amazed by internet : someone near New York found a solution and helped me to solve my problem. That 's just incredible too, the magic of internet. Here the weather is almost fine (13-14 °C in the day), come to france !
ReMark
I'm not on my CAD computer at the moment but when I finish my lunch I will attach it to my next post.

ReMark
File attached below created and saved in 2010 file format I have a home office. I've been known to work on a snowy weekend in between trips outside to shovel snow. It keeps me occupied. Yep, I'm an idiot. ReMark
I think I just accomplished the task in AutoCAD 2013. However, I'm not exactly sure I can explain how I did it. It definitely did not look like this in the beginning. And to think, yesterday I had no clue! Thanks for making me challenge myself manumzo. I've learned something new which means I haven't wasted this day after all. BTW....that is not a rendered image. It is what the can looks like using a Realistic visual style. If you would like a copy of this drawing I'd be happy to attach it to a future post. Just say the word. ReMark
I may have to go out and buy a can of Coke so I can make a 3D model similar to this one. I may even try modeling the pull tab at the top as well. Should be an interesting little project. What do you think?
manumzo
I am not at home right now. I just saw on my phone you accomplished the task successfully ! you're my master man ! i go back home in a hour, i can't wait to test the coordinates you entered (1 and 145 for the label) It's seems to be the right thing to do when i look at your screenshot. Respect ...
ReMark
Note that 1 is the width while 145 is the height. I think the change in appearance came when I changed the mapping to cylindrical which was basically the last thing I did. Seems counterintuitive not setting this first. I think the 2013 can looks better than the one produced with 2010. What do you think?
manumzo
I think my friend, that for me, you are above the sun ! How did you find this ??? I tried so many things ! I don't know what to say.... You have my eternal gratitude ! :notworthy: and if i can do anything for you, just ask. I come back tomorrow, it's 1h30 AM here and I'm going to sleep but Woouaawww !!! Thanks again ! I'll post my 3D model tomorrow. It's the SLEEK can (Ø58.1mm h=145mm) not the standard can . I made the pull tab on the top already. Like you said, it's a nice little project. When i 'll have the time, I'll render it on MAX. I'm glad you liked the challenge. Wouaaw again ...
ReMark
You are too kind my friend. I have a very long way to go. Have a good night's rest. I'll upload and attach the 2013 version of the drawing to my next post come Sunday morning after I have had my first cup of coffee and before going up to clean up after the snowstorm. Looking forward to seeing your most recent model as well. Regards, ReMark
ReMark
As promised here is the 2013 version (saved to 2010 file format). Hope you can put it to good use in some manner. Got to go have my first cup of coffee as my reward for waking at 5:30 a.m. to begin the process of shoveling out after last night's storm. We got somewhere around 210 mm and now there is a light freezing mist falling. Damnit. CocaCola Can 2013.dwg
