Cutting out thick surface from a body

Hi all, first post here !

Sorry if I'm using the wrong terms, but I made a picture of what I'm trying to do:

I have a body, and I'd like to "peel" some of it for a given thickness. I could use the split parts feature, but what would be the best way to create a surface inside the main body, with an offset to some of its faces ? Ideally I'd like to:

- Create a 3D surface projected onto the main body

- Offsetting it so it intersects it

- Split parts

I'm beginning SW :)

Are you familiar with the meaning of the terms solids, faces, and surfaces in SolidWorks?

What version of SWx are you using?

In the end, what you will need to learn to do is

Extrude a line as a surface body.

Knit

and split with surface.

Once you supply the most basic of information, what version of SWx you are using - I can attach an example, or better yet, you attach your file here.

Thanks for your answer !

I am using SW 2011. The part I'm most uncertain about is how to create the surface so it splits the solid at a given offset. In the given example, I could manually create the surface by extruding 3 times, but I wonder if there is a more general approach ?

I'll post an example of my specific case later today. Thanks again.

Ok, I found one way which I find a bit convoluted, but is there a better way ? I've attached the file :)

My ultimate goal is to make a shell that snaps to the main body... Maybe ambitious for my level.

I can't remember how r2011 worked, but you might be doing too much work.

In the attached image I simply extruded a U shape for Surface-Extrude1, notice Sketch3 highlighted at bottom of the part

and extruded a line for Surface Extrude2.

Then I used the Split command. Notice that I did not have to trim the surfaces.

I tried to make the part more intesting with Surface-Extrude 2 is not at the bottom of the part, but rather, up some distance from the bottom more like your original image (the angle I captured the screen shot does not clearly show this).

In r2011 you might have to Trim the surfaces and then Knit them together before you can do the Split.Split Part.png
