So I need a starting point on how to draw on a curved surface.

I am trying to do the detail section and just can not work out where to start, I know they probably do not have enough information as normal but I am working on that.

What I need is a few hints on how to draw the "slot" I know in solid works i can "project" onto the surface and then so a cut. But in AutoCAD I am having problems thinking about how to do it accurately.

I hope I can explain this OK.

Thanks

Something similar to this?

nestly can probably produce a short video that would show you better how to do it than I could explain it.

yeah. I have drawn it in solidworks and it looks fine I am just having difficulty with the slot being on a curved (bent) surface and getting the perspective right in autocad.

This is my solidworks drawing. 1112.jpg

Very nice Solidworks drawing (someday I have to learn that program) however I thought we were talking about AutoCAD?

The basic steps I took were:

Create regions.

Do subtractions where necessary.

Rotate side view.

Extrude each view so they intersect.

Used the Interfere command to obtain the (almost) complete object.

Realize the two holes are missing because the object is bent.

Locate circles for holes on new 3D solid object.

Used the PressPull command to create the holes.

Done.

Side and top views after being extruded and the Interfere command is run. That red part in red is your 3D strap.

I use solidworks because I am a student and want to maintain the little knowledge I have of the program and it helps drawing it "multiple time" in solidworks and AutoCAD :)/

So you are describing doing it in 3D in AutoCAD? I really need to work on the 2D side of it. I guess the problem is there is no view that would be true size and shape? to make a aux view from.

Yes, in AutoCAD.

So you just want to see a section through the strap? Here you go then...

OK. And I am not sure on the part whether they would do the cutouts and then bend or bend and then do cutouts? I drew mine in solidworks as a flat piece and then did cutouts and then bend.

Yours is bent before cutouts, so the 3 holes are fine but the slot would be slightly different? I am just having difficulty deciding from the drawing which way it needs to be drawn? Does that make sense?

Look at post #7.

I can't tell you how the part would be made. That is not within my field of knowledge. I work in the chemical manufacturing sector.

Thanks. That looks very similar to what I am thinking.

Using your image as the example I think you would have to create 2 seperate cuts.

the first cut (Parallel to the underside) wont be as long at the 14mm, make it say 10mm

the second cut which would be parallel to the 45 deg angle (or perpendicular to the line "or would it be this way"

I have attached a screenshot and 3d model of what i mean, you would have to draw 2 seperate cutouts.

ps. I've just guessed the sizes.

I think from a manufacturing viewpoint the slot would be cut with the strap flat then bent. But that's a guess on my part.

To show it this way using AutoCAD two cuts would probably be required.

Spot on. The hole would be pre-cut before forming.

Thanks guys some good stuff for me to think about.
