I have merged your two threads into this one. Please don't start multiple threads asking the same question.

Are the paint deform tools missing or are they greyed out?

Do you have your model selected? I'm not at my work computer right now, but I believe the tools will only be available when you have an object selected. If nothing is selected the tools will not be available.

When you're learning, there's no such thing as a silly question. If you don't know how to do something, just ask. :)

Hi! I had the same question... :) so after selecting the object and clicking freeform -> paint deform, for some reason it doesn't give me a paint deform toolbar breakdown with all the brushes so I can't choose anything to use. Can you please advise me what to do? Thank you!

It has been several years since I last used studio max and I don't have it installed anymore, so I can only take a guess. Is your object an editable poly, or do you have an edit poly modifier applied to the object? If it's just a standard primitive I don't think the paint deform tools will be available. If you post some screenshots I might be able to troubleshoot further, but for right now, that's about all I can offer.
