What are these little grey boxes?

Hi I am fairly new to autocad - sometimes when I draw a rectangle little grey squares appear with red and black diagonal lines in?

 

What are these and how do I toggle them off and on?

You somehow managed to enable "constraints". Look to the group of buttons/icons in the lower left hand side of your screen. I think the first one on the left with enable/disable constraints.

Furthermore, you can go to the Parametric Tab > Manage Panel and use the "Delete Constraints" tool. You can use Ctrl+A to select everything in the drawing to ensure you delete all the constraints.
