Your main drive should be solid state. Platter drives should be used for data backup.

There are plenty of places that will sell you a cheap computer but if you want to do serious work then invest the time and money to buy or build something better. It will cost you less in the long run.

Sorry but to me the Dell is a better deal.

CPU: The custom has a 3rd gen i7 sandy bridge based cpu which is not as powerful as the 4th gen haswell based i7 in the Dell.

Video: ATi cards suck. Plain and simple. nVidia is always the better choice.

With the $$ saved get a 256 gb SSD for the OS and up the ram in the Dell.

I will second that.

For more bang for your buck on graphics card, you could get a gamer card cheaper than a workstation card and most likely wouldn't notice the difference. I agree with the Nvidia being better than ATI.

Thanks for the help everyone! After perusing the internet at length and asking around, I've decided to go with the following setup:

Of course, it's not perfect, but I believe it'll be more than enough for my needs (3DsMax modeling and animation mainly).

I'll also be getting two 22" Dell Ultrasharp monitors. :)

Cool :) Tell us how it does when you get it together. Umm, I didn't see a line for a copy of Windows ;)

Looks decent enough. I see the under $1,000 budget took a hit. Understandable. Good luck with your new toy!

It's worth going a bit over the budget and getting a machine to last rather than pay out a lot more earlier down the line.
