deano33 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 My Directors pushing to replace our PC's with MAC's. Is this a mistake and how does CAD run on a MAC. I understand you are stuck with the Ribbon on a MAC and it is a bit Buggy. Any thoughts and experiances would be great. Presume we will have to buy a new plotter with compatable drivers also. Quote
f700es Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 My one question to them would be WHY? Other than being forced into buying more expensive hardware you will lose all vertical editions based on AutoCAD. That is you will be not able to use anything like AutoCAD Arch, MEP, Mechanical and so on. No Revit on Mac as well. Most 3rd party add ons will not work with the Mac version either (or I have read). To me this is beyond stupid. Quote

f700es Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I think it comes down to someone in upper management wanting something shinny on their desk. You know there are shinny PCs out there as well. Vizio makes a PC that looks shinny. Squint at it and you'll think it's an iMac except that it costs less and runs the CAD software that you need to run your business. Quote
f700es Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 OK one more post, in all honesty I would never buy an all-in-one for myself or as a CAD station. Sure there are some really nice ones out there but the lack of video upgrade ability is a deal breaker to me. Dell has the new XPS 27 aio that has a tilt screen that can pivot down to act like a large tablet. Lenovo has there IdeaCentre A Series that is very similar. Both are pricey and better can be had for less when buying a separate monitor. Quote

Whoever is trying to sell this change should be forced to demonstrate in detail how it will improve, or at least in no way damage, the ability to produce the designs and quality your customers have been used to. They should be told straight out that AutoCAD does NOT equal AutoCAD when it comes to changing platforms. f700es Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Also find out what Apple machines they are looking into. Then do a cost comparison. The old "we have macs and therefor do not need IS support" is also a bag of lies. Here is a good one for a 15" laptop. 15" Macbook Pro: $2,449.99 2.7 Ghz quad core i7 8 gb ram 750 gb hdd nVidia GF GT650m w/ 1gb ram dvd rw Dell XPS 15: $1,699.99 3.2 Ghz quad core i7 8 gb ram 750 gb hdd w/32 gb ssd nVidia GF GT640m w/ 2 gb ram dvd rw I have a hard time seeing the $750 difference myself. I like to call it the "OSX Tax". Quote
