paisis123 Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Yay! I guess when something like this happens, usually a gentile shove in the right direction is all I need. Quote
JD Mather Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 No, and I will try to talk with my boss and my bosses boss about getting a company copy for this machine. It could be useful to get it and use it. Though I have to ask many questions about what inventors capabilities are, cause there is some specific things I want to do and simulate. You can download a 30-day trial, but it is really a different beast. You should forward your file to your VAR and have them demonstrate Inventor's capabilities in this type of design. It would take you many months to learn on your own what it could do. Quote
paisis123 Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) Really? Many months. Fine... Well then, I will download the 30 day trial and see what I can do. I have used Inventor sparingly in the past, as I went to a paid trip to an Autodesk Learning Center for 3 days on the basics of Inventor and VBA. though my current job does not have it, but would most likely use it to the fullest. JD Mather Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Inventor is a professional program that deserves (requires?) a professional level of preparation (training and experience). 3-day class equivalent of baby starting to crawl 6-months experience - toddler stumbling about 1-yr experience - discovers surface modeling 3-yrs experience pro into surface modeling and Inventor Tooling (mold tools). I for one agree wholeheartedly on that. I have started Autocad since junior year in high school. Thats 4 years ago, that time line above describes me very well. Though, If I can convince this company to purchase inventor, then I can play with it 8 hours a day, everyday. Quote
ReMark Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Play with it? You're going to forgo actual professional training? Quote
paisis123 Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Play with it? You're going to forgo actual professional training? No, what i meant is that to tinker around with the program. But yes, I would pursue professional training. Quote
JD Mather Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 ... then I can play with it 8 hours a day, everyday. We know it is play, but don't tell the boss that. What you really need is to put together an example with the trial that demonstrates to the boss how the additional $1300 can be quickly recovered (perhaps on the first job). In many cases there is no real way of doing some of these jobs in AutoCAD, we might be able to do enough to send out to the shop floor, but this doesn't approach the goal of "digital prototyping" where we define nearly everything before cutting any chips. paisis123 Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Very true. My boss stated that if we can see everything in 3D before hand, then we can make changes to the 2D layout, before they make the tooling. It would save time, money and help speed up the design process. And I think inventor has an option to make layouts, thus to give to the customer. Quote
JD Mather Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) .... And I think inventor has an option to make layouts, thus to give to the customer. The "dumbed down" viewbase commands in AutoCAD came from Inventor. When you download Inventor I recommend you start your re-aquaintance here http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/skillsusa%20university.pdf Edited April 24, 2013 by JD Mather Quote
