Default Template File

Recommended Posts

For the longest time I have been working off of my own pc for AutoCAD and I always clicked the button for "new file" and one opened.

Got a server today and set it all up and when I hit the "new file" button now it wants me to specify the template file each time before it makes the file. How can I just get it to default to the template file I want each time?

Thanks!

Very easily, in your OPTIONS

on the FILES tab

TEMPLATE FILES

DEFAULT QNEW.

Browse to the one you want to use, and set it as your default.

Bearing in mind that those ending with ISO will be Metric.

I just noticed that you are on LT.

The description I just gave is for Autocad Vanilla, probably not so different.

Do you not have a custom .DWT file which might better serve you?

Including dimstyles, layers, text styles and the like?

If not, easily done, just choose a good representative drawing (after going over it with a fine tooth comb),

and do a SAVE AS, give it an appropriate and meaningful name, and save it as a .DWT format.

That will locate it in the TEMPLATE folder, after which you can designate it as your default template for QNEW,

and you will hit the ground running each time you start a new file. :D

There are plenty of other things, like your drawing sheet, and lots of drawing based registry settings which

would also be helpful. The list of things you might want to include is reasonably inexhaustible.

I do indeed have a custom .dwt file I keep very up to date. I guess I just had forgotten how to make sure AutoCAD was pointing to it. Since I loved it off of the local drive I just needed to point to the new location on the different drive. You helped a ton, thanks!

Glad I could help, and that you are back up to speed. :D

My default .DWT is a veritable pantry of all of my favorite Autocad flavors.

Greatly improving drawing conformity and speed.

If you have your own personalized set of SYSTEM VARIABLE settings

it is also a good idea to save them as a .SVF format file.

Once you have that, should you be moving around between different computers

or workstations, you can easily load those preferences.

Be careful though not to override the regular user's settings, unless you

have first saved their .SVF settings, so that you can restore them when you are through

on any particular station.
