Changing an existing Polyline length

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Easy question...I think.

I have an existing polyline of approximately 5'. When I choose PEDIT where do I go from there to make the plolyline exactly 12'8"?

I'm in architectural mode.

Ooops, I forgot to say this is in DraftSight, which should be similar to AutoCAD.

Thanks for the help

In AutoCAD you can achieve that in many ways:

  • place the UCS on that polyline (Object option) and use the STRETCH command; use the length difference as displacement.
  • use the SCALE command with Reference option.
  • apply the LENGTHEN command with Total or Delta length mode.

You may check wich one is available in said CAD software.

Thinking twice on this, if that polyline is not made by only one straight segment, then the only method that will work is the second one.

Can you post a picture of your polyline?

The lengthen command worked, I choose TOTAL, and input 12'8". However, the line went from 5" to 12'5 1/2", instead of 12'8". I checked the dimension endpoints of the line to make sure they were on the endpoints of the line, which they were, so I don't know why it did not go to the proper length. To get the polyline to precisely 12'8", I began lengthening the line in increments until it was the proper length. At any rate, it's the length I want now.

Thanks

PS: What is the command to shorten a single polyline?

PSS: As for the posting a picture, I still haven't figured out the secret to do that on this forum...sorry.

You can also customize the behavior of your dynamic dimensional input, as shown in the image,

this being for use with the GRIP STRETCH functionality..

Stretch and Lengthen can be used to make a line longer or shorter.

To attach an image or a DWG file first click on the Go Advanced button below the right hand corner of the Quick Reply window. At the next screen click on the Paperclip icon. Find and upload your file (be aware that there are file size limits). Once the file is uploaded then Attach it to your post.

BTW...if your line was 5' long and you want it to be 12'-8" long you would stretch it 7'-8".

1. I'm guessing to shorten a line, I input a negative entry?

2. Finally, a valid explanation!

3. But where's the fun in that?

This is good...

Only when use LENGTHEN with Delta option; if chouse Total, then still input the desired length. For SCALE will need to use a pozitive factor smaller than 1.
