Arty Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Hi, I'm new to use xref's and a bit unsurtain of how the edit part works... I have a drawing of a siteplan where I have attached my title block as an xref. For every drawing there is an individual project numer, project title etc and this is what I'd like to edit. I have the basic text set up in the title block with the righ font and size and just need to change a few numbers. Now it seems like all drawings I have attached to the same title block xref, have got the same project number... I'd like to get both titleblock and the text I need to edit into the drawing together as it would save time and all drawings will look the same. Is there is a way of doing this without changeing all the other drawings?? What happen if I do a copy of the xref - is it still linked to the original, but I can do whatever changes to it? Need some clear instructions! Quote
Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) The drawing sheet XREF of which you speak is a different drawing, and should contain ATTRIBUTES, which can be altered within the drawing. If you double left click on the title block, the ENHANCED ATTRIBUTE EDITOR dialog should open, which will enable you to change the VALUES of those attributes which need to be changed. Yes, you can copy this drawing sheet around too, without XREFing, and you will still be able to edit the attributes within your drawings independently. Edited October 24, 2012 by Dadgad Quote
Arty Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 Don't think I have any ATTRIBUTES set up in my title block. Sounds handy though. I might need to do that first to make this work properly! Quote
Arty Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 Hey, I've done my ATTRIBUTES now, do you know how I can write a sentence without the '_'showing? Quote
Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Read the commandline prompts. Try copying it into the drawing, what happens then, all good? Can you post the block? Quote
Arty Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 Do you mean that I should xref the titleblock first, then copy in the attributes? I've tried that but I still can't write words with a space between. The strange thing is that some of the attributes don't have the '_'... even though all of the m have '_'when I set it up...? See 'Administrative lots...' (works to whrite with space) and 'Part of...' (doesn't work with space) Quote
Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) The attached image should help you. The TAG is not what is written in the attribute, it is more like a placeholder, and it cannot contain spaces, among other symbols. The DEFAULT is what is actually in use in the ATTRIBUTE. You should not be in the BLOCK EDITOR, but rather the ENHANCED ATTRIBUTE EDITOR, when changing ATTRIBUTE values within a particular drawing. Edited October 24, 2012 by Dadgad Quote
Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 I suggest you use your F1 key and access the Autocad help files, from which I accessed the following by searching for ATTRIBUTES Quote
Arty Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 I try to get to Enhanced Attribute Editor. It won't came up dubble left clicking so I found the command eattedit and tried that. The command line ansered 'choose block'. Can't click on anything in my title block, nor the attiributes... Thanks for trying to help! Quote
Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) The DRAWING SHEET is your block, which when created has ATTRIBUTES defined. Each ATTRIBUTE will have a TAG and a PROMPT, as well as properties, such as FONT, TEXT HEIGHT, COLOR. Once your block has been created and saved you can COPY or INSERT it into other drawings. In those drawings into which it has been placed (by either means) you should have the ability to edit the VALUE (you don't want to further edit the TAG AND PROMPT, they are placeholders, if you will). Those VALUEs are displayed in the right hand column of the ENHANCED ATTRIBUTE EDITOR, as previously attached in post #2. Don't get too confused by the fact that you may choose to XREF the block into another drawing. What seems to be confusing to you, are the creation and editing of ATTRIBUTES within a BLOCK. Dadgad Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 In 2012 if you select an ATTRIBUTED BLOCK, you will find the EDIT ATTRIBUTE option available in the right click shortcut menu, it will merely open the ENHANCED ATTRIBUTE EDITOR, as if you had double left clicked on the block. Quote

Need some clear instructions! There are other ways but this is the way I do my title blocks as XREFs: There are two parts to my title blocks. The main part that is the same on every sheet. That is the XREF. That way when something changes that needs to happen on every sheet, you do it in that file. The other part is the drawing information which varies from sheet to sheet. I make a block from this, attributes can be used or not depending on your preferences. I usually just have text. This gets inserted into the layouts and is editted there. Sheet Sets is supposed to be a better way of doing it. I've heard good and bad about it but have yet to try it out. Quote
Arty Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 Okay, thanks guys! Would it work to take in my xref with text and all and then select what I would like to edit, click remove from workspace (or what it's called)? Would that amke selected text editable for just the individual project? Quote
RobDraw Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 No. You need to make a block of the text and keep it separate from the XREF. Quote
