solo1
ello' everyone. I just started using inventor 12 a few weeks ago and was just assigned to do this piece. I've never done anything this complicated and wasn't sure where to start. Should i start sketching from the point of the cylinder, or from the current front view? Maybe draw half of it then revolve it? I know the sequence of combining parts is key...any tips would be appreciated
JD Mather
Complex? That's trivial. Start how you think it would be started and then attach your file here for suggestions. If you haven't read this, you might want to start here http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/SkillsUSA%20University.pdf
solo1
heres my start at it. the top left "domed" part shouldn't be a problem, now I'm just trying to figure out how to do the "v" chamfer at the bottom

JD Mather
Seems like there is a mistake in there somewhere - but I have to run. (ahh - I see my mistake) Attach your ipt file here.
solo1
JDMather, I thought that you had to draw a sketch on a plane and then extrude it, before drawing another sketch on a different plane? How do you draw a sketch on 1 plane, then change views and draw on a different plane while keeping the first view intact? Thank you much
f700es
Huh, that was fun. I did it in AutoCAD The holes are probably not correct as mine are just 12 dia but I think the rest is correct. I should look at some of JD's tutorials and see if I can follow them in Invt. Fusion. Might be good to learn some more.
JD Mather
I should look at some of JD's tutorials and see if I can follow them in Invt. Fusion. I have never written anything (good) on Fusion. Fusion should not have been named Inventor - it is a completely different animal.
f700es
They do seem to be almost different animals. Product tie-in/name dropping I guess.
solo1
its nice to see that you both did this easily, but seeing the finished product doesn't help that much I thought that you had to draw a sketch on a plane and then extrude it, before drawing another sketch on a different plane? How do you draw a sketch on 1 plane, then change views and draw on a different plane while keeping the first view intact? Like Mather's first picture posted with just sketches
JD Mather
Finish Sketch. New Sketch. you might start here http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2007/MA105-1L%20Mather.pdf 10 minutes later - done! (well except for fixing my errors, but since Inventor is a parametric program.....)
