i received an orthorectified aerial image that is bounded by large white background, which i need to remove and still preserve the coordinate system attributes. i have plunked around with Raster Tools, but fear it is not as simple as a cut/crop tool and was unable to remove this white background.

any hints or leads on which tools to use in Raster Design?

I don't know RD, but for sure you can crop an image (keeping the georeferency) by means of the opensource Qgis, sir.

Don't have the 2011 version of RD but in 2009 there is a crop tool. Then export the image to a new file and select to create the world file or geotiff.

Building on Murph's comments, you may find the ICROPPOLY (Crop Polygonal Region) Command, the IRUBPOLY (Remove Polygonal Region) Command, and/or the ITOUCHUP Command to be of particular use.

Also, FWIW, I have worked with RD for LDD 2006, LDC 2009, C3D & MEP 2011, and C3D & MEP 2012 and have not noticed any substantial changes between versions (other than the inclusion of the Ribbon Tab, that is)... Admittedly, I use it infrequently, and certainly not every aspect of RD. I mostly just setup project aerials as a design resource at the beginning of a project these days.

i tried in vain with all these tools, but nothing really worked, and was very time consuming. My problem was that i needed to preserve/cut out a very elaborate image "inside" a large, square white rectangle, so the only tool that kind of worked was the polygon tool and it was painstaking and not complete.

thanks though for the nice screen shots - they were helpful!

What didn't work? Can you post the image?

Sounds like there may be some weak hardware configuration, methinks (no offense)... I have zero performance lag when modifying a raster image as discussed here.

Heck, I have near instantaneous raster image Load & Unload on mouse-over here.

Now, when exporting a raster image with world file to another image file format... That's another story. LoL
