Having trouble using the "cycle" function while in mid command (used when selecting objects that are on top of each other). Yeah, I know it sounds silly to ask, but since I got on to 2009, and the function was changed from just holding down the shift key to some other series of keys I just can't get it to work. Also, my "help" command is not working, so this is why I'm asking here.

Thanks.

Have you checked allow cycling behavior in OPTIONS > SELECTION tab?

Posted

Here are a slew of system variables and their options, which affect culling, viewing and selection cycling.

No doubt if you look them over you will find a description of how you would like them to work.

As these are SYSTEM VARIABLE settings, in order to change one you would enter the name of the variable

shown on the left side at the commandline, then when prompted, enter the new value which

describes the behavior which you would prefer.

You can see the SELECTION CYCLING icon circled in red on the screen shot.

You can turn it on and off by clicking on it, or by CTRL+W.

By right clicking on the icon you can access the settings dialogue box.

I favor the show selection cycling list.

If you click on something which is at all ambiguous because of overlapping,

the system makes an assumption of which one you mean, and it is highlighted on the list. If the highlighted selection is correct, just ENTER. If not, then specify the correct one on the dropdown list, then hit ENTER.

I don't have that option.

Geez, I don't even know how to get to those varriable menu options that you show. For so many years the "cycling" feature was just there for me. I never had to think much about it as it was always hold down the shift key and select. But now, in 2009 it decides to go away. I didn't realize this would be such a big deal.

Thanks for your input. I will look around to see if I can find what you note above.

Set your LEGACYCTRLPICK variable to 1.

The system variables dialogue shown is from 2013, but I believe that you will find that setting it to 1 will make you a somewhat happier camper. :)

That worked!!! Thanks.

I would like to know how to access that "system variables" dialog that you show there.

I'm glad I was able to help get you back on the tracks. :)

Unfortunately now that I've made this change I am havingtrouble selecting items. Before I would use the mouse and select first item, then select 2nd item and so on until I was done selecting. Now after I selectthe 1st item, when I select the 2nd item, the first item selected becomesde-selected.

Hopefully this isn't something that changed a whole bunch ofother simple operations that I've been used to. If so I will have to changeback as it's not worth it for cycling.

Set your PICKADD value to suit your taste, as shown in the image from the system variable dialogue. Currently yours is set to 0.

Wow. Thanks. I've never typed that before in my life and I had always been able to select more than one object until the other day. What causes things like that to happen?

Cadtergeist, fellow workers, poorly written commands or lisps aborted midcommand?

Hard to know for sure.

I don't know how to do it in earlier versions, but within the SYSVDLG at the bottom of the box you can SAVEALL, which is very helpful.

It saves the current configuration of all of your SYSTEM VARIABLES to an .svf file, which ensures your being able to reset all of your favorite values, in

the event of any undesired changes. Additionally, if you keep them handy on a flashdrive, and have to work on different computers, sets them instantly to your specifications.

Needless to say, if working on a coworker's machine, best make them a copy of their current .svf settings before changing them temporarily to suit your personal variable preferences.

In that way you can restore all settings when you are through with the workstation to their previous settings.

If you ever need to restore the default SYSTEM VARIABLE settings you can use the READ icon as circled in the image.

That READ icon is also how you would access a customized .svf file which you wanted to apply.
