convert object made with 3d lines into a solid

Hello everybody and thank you for having made this site where people can share ideas and and help others improve their Autocad skills.

I drew a 3d shape using 3dpoly and I want to convert that drawing, which is now only a 3d sketch, into a solid.I have attached a picture of the lines sketch

sulita.jpg.

Thank you!

Are the 3dpolylines open or closed?

Posted

Strangely, it says they are NOT closed.

Why not just create the object as a solid to begin with?

Posted

the creation process for this object went as follows: I drew the surrounding lines and a space was left between the lines; I have to fill that space perfectly with an object of dimensions that are not standard (the angles are odd, the dimensions of the lines are not round numbers), the base of the pyramid is a rhombus rather than a square...But most of all, I want to be able to create a 3d object out of a selection of lines that describe/outline/border that object.

Precision is crucial, this is the bottom line.

it basically consists of two pyramids with a rhombus shaped base and different heights

Great explanation but I did not understand a word of it.

If you have a closed 3dpolyline then you can convert it to a surface. Surfaces can be thickened. If you have enough surfaces to create a water-tight structure then that, in turn, can be converted to a solid (AutoCAD 2012 and higher) via the SURFSCULPT command. I just tested the method and it works. I am currently running 2012.

If I were to extrude all surfaces and keep their common points it may work.

Is there a way to do that, extrude all surfaces and keep the volume that is common to all?

Posted

You don't extrude the surfaces you thicken them with the...THICKEN command.

have a little more patience with me,please, I don't know how to create a surface from 3dpolylines. I would be grateful it you explained how to do it.

thank you, ReMark!

Remember when I asked about whether or not the 3dpolylines were closed? If they are closed you can create a surface. If you can create a surface then that surface can be thickened. With me so far?

At what point did I run out of patience?

3D Modeling workspace.

Home tab > Solid Editing panel > downward pointing arrow (click on it)....second icon to right on drop-down. Hover over it. Tooltip: CONVTOSURFACE

This all assumes you are working with closed 3dpolylines.

Did you finally convert your object to a 3D solid? Yes? No? Still trying?

Posted

I am still trying.

I took a break(1.5 hours, the time it took me to reach home) but before and after the dead time I could not create a solid(pun intended).I am now back at it: I retraced the lines and made 8 triangles that I have extruded into 8 prisms; I cannot intersect the prisms because, predictably, some of them do not intersect so I have to rotate them 180 degrees.

Not yet but there is hope(I would, however, appreciate a more elegant solution).

Posted

what I am doing is completely impractical and time consuming; I need to transform a 3dpolyline triangle into a triangular surface. That's it.If you can tell me how, please do!

Posted

interesting: extruding the 8 prisms towards the interior results in a much slimmer object of similar shape...so that is out of the question.

Posted

I have converted my triangles into surfaces...convToSurface is the command.

only now I saw you post from 5:47pm...I am tired

you did not run out of patience but at the rate I was asking questions with simple answers I thought it was inevitable.

how do I create a pyramid with a rhombus base? this is it,it has taken too much time...I will make 2 rhombus base pyramids with identical bases and different heights and 'union' them into my shape .

Posted

A different approach would be to EXTRUDE (or PRESSPULL) the base up to the vertex, then SLICE off the sides using the SLICE>3Point option.

Attach a copy of your DWG file to your next post and someone here will take a look at it, figure out the way to do, and instruct you as to the proper method.

If the file size is too big zip it first.
