Organic
I don't think you can. You probably could in PhotoShop or similar software though.
JD Mather
How we can remove the white background of a picture inserted in either Cad or Solidworks! :?Any suggestions! I'm almost certain I've done this before in AutoCAD. (but this memory goes back 10 years or more, don't use AutoCAD much anymore) Can you attach the file here. In Autodesk Inventor it is trivially easy (the pixel in lower right corner of image is treated as transparency pixel, so whatever that pixel is can be turned off throughout the image in Inventor). I'll have to check if something similar in SWx. I would like to check with you actual image file.

samchums26
insert the PNG file in autocad, click the image and right-click go to properties. Go to MISC, background transparency, and then select yes.
MSasu
Along PNG format, the transparency is supported in AutoCAD for GIF files as well. Another comment, you don't require to have access to Adobe's Photoshop in order to create transparent background for images - there are available free/cheap alternatives: GIMP, Paint.Net or IrfanView. samchums26
you can save it also in GIF but the only problem is that the quality of the image is different from the original image. you can use PAINT as it is already available in your PC or laptop. User2012
Although I've tried Properties>Transparency for the pic inserted in CAD, I didn't see any change! Also using "Decal" in Solidworks, again I couldn't get rid of the white background! Meanwhile, I've tried "Fuzzy Select Tool" in GIMP; however, the image inserted in either CAD or Solidworks appeared with the white background! MSasu
The image you attached is a JPG format which doesn't support transparency - you need to use GIF or PNG format instead. Just try with this one that I edited for you.
stevsmith
In SW, if you inset the image as a decal you can apply a mask to remove the white from the background. Double click on the image or edit decal, select the mapping tab. I'm pretty sure its at the bottom of the list to apply mask. I'll check in the morning at work. MSasu
Actually, the Transparency worked for your GIF pic, but I don't know why it didn't work for another picture inserted in CAD, which I already saved in either PNG or GIF format (plz see attachments + dwg file) Thanx! I'm afraid that the PNG file you attached doesn't have transparent areas.

User2012
I assumed if I saved the picture in either PNG or GIF format, it would work! Would you please let me know what I should do to have an image with the transparancy areas before inserting the picture in CAD? I have to do this for some other pictures as well. MSasu
The action to take is related entirely to the program you use to process the image - in IrfanView for example you need to pick the transparent color when save; in other will need to set transparent background and erase the parts you want them transparent. For this reason, you should either consult his help file or re-ask your question specifying his name and maybe someone who also know it will be able give you a dedicated answer. User2012
Thanks! Now the transparency is working! I am just wondering why the white color of the background turned Black after applying the transparency in CAD! Meanwhile, I tried Decal
stevsmith
Meanwhile, I tried Decal Good to hear that this works for you.
mor424mont
why don't you just remove the background first before uploading it on autocad? or as Mr. Steven advised you to do. Btw thank you Mr. Steven for you're very detailed answer. This will be a great help to us who don't know pretty much about autocad.

stevsmith
This will be a great help to us who don't know pretty much about autocad. Maybe I've read this out of context, but User2012 did ask if it was possible in either "Cad or Solidworks". I have given an answer for the latter of the two, (Solidworks) My experience of AutoCad has somewhat diminished over the past 4~5 years, but what I do remember one time when I was creating a new title block I has to insert an image with a black background. I was able to get someone to convert the file for me to xxxx and when I got it back there was a pre-defined mask on it. I'll see if I can dig it out.
