pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I am a contractor that does work for several different companies. When these companies send me their dwg file I have no problem opening them up to edit them, but once I complete my edits and email the file back to them they are telling me that their autocad crashes while trying to open the drawing or the whole computer itself. Most recently I only made a very minor edit to their dwg which was editing two areas of text and still crashes their computer when I send it back. I am using Autocad Lt 2013, while they are using autocad 2010. I backsaved the file as well as purged the drawing after I was finished and still no luck. Also I noticed on another job after doing very minor edits, once I saved the new version, the file size multiplied like ten thousand times its size. Anyone know what may be going on? Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Post a copy of one of these DWG files if you can. I have a full version of AutoCAD 2010 I can test against. Are we sure there is no macro virus associated with the returned drawings? Quote
JPlanera Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I have been hearing some horror stories about the new version... Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 The file size is to big to attatch to the thread. Originally the file was 3MB, Now it is 12MB. I can zip it back down to 3mb but then still it is too big to attatch to the thread. I have emailed the drawing to other people in my office who have 2013 and it opens just fine. Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Sorry, but emailing the file to other users who run the exact same program is not a test in my opinion. So, these files come to you and they are roughly 3MB in size. You make minor edits and they grow to 12MB? Is the problem being experienced by just one client or all clients you send files back to? Try zipping the file. Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 It has happened with two clients. Even after zipping the file(which does get the size back to around 3MB) still cannot be opened for whatever reason. They were able to ope the file in "Trueview 2010" but not Autocad. Most other clients just get hard copies from us so there really isnt much emailing after i receive the original. Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Are the clients using full AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT like yourself? Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 I am not positive if they are using Lt or the full version. Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 It might help to know don't you think? Ask them if all updates/service packs for the versions they are running have been installed while you're at it. Quote
Patrick Hughes Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Regarding the drawings after return e-mailing them, you might want to ask your customers if it is their habit to opening the drawing directly from the e-mail or if they save to disk and open. I'm old school and have formed a habit of always opening from a saved to disk file having never trusting an e-mailed copy to work properly due to the e-mail/temporary file mechanism. Regarding the file size explosion could that be related to some kind of layer filter settings? Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 I emailed both clients asking them weather or not they saved the file first,if they have an LT/Full version, and also if they have performed all recent updates on their respected version. Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Gadz. Now we're responding to the same question in two different threads. Where's my Excedrin! LoL Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 originally i posted in this thread and realized it would not be the most appropriate place for the question so i posted it elsewhere. My bad. http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?70692-crashes-others-computers-after-emailing-dwg Quote
pneal231 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 I asked the clients these questions and this is what they replied with. 1. Is the file being opened directly from the email or saved and then opened? No, saved to desktop first. 2. Are all of the AutoCAD updates/service packs installed on the recipients computer? Yes, AutoCad 2010 has all recent service packs installed. 3. Are they using an LT or FULL version of AutoCAD? Full Version Quote
ReMark Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 One of your clients could open the returned file using DWG TrueView. Ask them to back save it one version then try to open the new file with their own version of AutoCAD. What happens? Quote
Dadgad Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 yes, purged the drawing. Welcome to the forum. SLW210 is suggesting using the "-PURGE" command which can only be entered at the commandline. The leading HYPHEN makes the command more powerful than the regular PURGE command. It is capable of purging the numerous REGAPPS which will have been added by 2013. Having just run it on an old drawing, you can see from this commandline history all the things it will remove. ReMark Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Ask one of your clients to run the simple exercise I mentioned in my previous post. If it still crashes their computer then I might ask you to email me a sample drawing so I can test it on AutoCAD 2010 myself. Are any of these clients in China by any chance or do they exchange drawings with any firms located in China? Quote
pneal231 Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Just heard back from a client. After trying both methods listed ubove, they still are reporting that it crashes. ('-purge') command & (backsaving from trueview) Quote
