CalypsoArt Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Can I attach a raster image so it is part of a drawing and travels with it. If so, how do I do it? I realize it would increase file size. I often add reference .jps to my drawings for the shop. I'd like to be sure that when the file is moved to a different folder or archived it includes the image. Answers, suggestions? Quote
scj Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 It is possible, see http://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/converting-raster-image-to-a-matrix-of-pixels-inside-the-dwg-tip7678 I succesfull use this progam but you are right it will increase the file size. Regards - even to the cadforum.cz Jochen Quote
MSasu Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Don't need to look for a third-part application; there is the build-in command INSEROBJ. Quote
Blackfish Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Don't need to look for a third-part application; there is the build-in command INSEROBJ. As far as I know you cannot insert any raster image using INSERTOBJ. This works with BMP format only. Other image files supported by AutoCAD (like JPG, TIFF, PNG etc.) are attached in drawing as a references only Quote
MSasu Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Just tested the command with JPG, GIF and PNG format and works as expected. To import an already existing image you should choose Create from File option and browse to the image you want to insert as OLE. Quote

Before sending the previous post I'd tested it as well, and a white rectangular with name was only pasted when try a JPG file. Mircea, when you have Insert OLE Object Dialog Box what type of file (program) you chose to insert for example jpg? IN my LT there are only 'Bitmap Image' and 'Paintbrush Picture' and other stuff like all Microsoft type of files etc., but nothing supporting raster images. Quote
MSasu Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Not sure about LT, but in full version you have two options available: Create New and Create from File. For first one you need to indicate attachment's type, for the second one you just browse and pick the desired file (all files are visible by default). Quote
Blackfish Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 There are two option as you said and when you chose 'Create from file' you can select any file you want, but nothing happens (apart a white rectangular with name as I mentioned before) when you try anything else beside BMP format. Quote
MSasu Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Don't know what to say, if is an issue with your AutoCAD/operating system or is the LT behavior. Maybe another user using LT may clarify this out. Quote

Blackfish, please check this setting (if it is available in LT) sounds like it might be the fly in the ointment here. Or could it be the RASTERPREVIEW setting? Quote
Blackfish Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Sorry Dadgad, but I'm just saying that AutoCAD LT doesn't support other image file than BMP when inserting as an object into drawing (INSERTOBJ). There is no problem with images attached into drawing as a reference (IMAGEATTACH command). However I couldn't find anything in documentation saying that LT is limited to bitmap images using INSERTOBJ. PS. In LT there is no such complex Option Dialog Box, but I've checked variables and all are properly set. Quote

No apologies required Blackfish, I am just throwing some stuff out there trying to help, I don't know much about Raster. Rasta, I got you covered. Quote
sparkyuk Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 You could always covert the file to a file that is recognised by AC using photoshop or same type of program yes ? Quote
Blackfish Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 You could always covert the file to a file that is recognised by AC using photoshop or same type of program yes ? It's even easier... and you don't have to buy Photoshop to embed an image in AutoCAD when inserting OLE object you should select 'Create new' > 'Paintbrush Picture' and inside the program 'Edit' > 'Paste From...' and you can select image file you want e.g. JPG. Then you close Paintbrush and 'your' file is pasted in AutoCAD, but that's not the original file, it's only converted JPG to bitmap image (BMP). However it helps in certain situation. The OP's question was about embeding images in AutoCAD drawing... I'm just saying that with LT it works only with BMP image. Quote
samchums26 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 open the image in paint, crop the image and paste it in autocad. Quote
MSasu Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Seems that there is an issue with LT and image formats other than BMP - I just spoke with a mate who is using LT and he confirmed the behavior encountered by Blackfish. Quote

Thank you Micrea, as a LT user I was sure about that, but with all these posts I have started thinking that I was doing something wrong Quote
SAFeSTeR Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 In a previous employment myself and other colleagues had this same issue. One came up with a 'solution'. It's been a few years since I tried it so I'm not a 100% sure it will work or if I remember the process, but might be worth a try... 1. Open the image in your internet browser (by using File -> Open). 2. Right click and copy image. 3. 'Paste Special' into AutoCAD. Hope this helps? Quote
