If I want to use Trueview to convert files down to my AutoCAD LT 2008; I just open the file in Trueview and convert, right?

Well...Yes, but Trueview then becomes my default DWG, DXF program when double clicking on the files. There is a fix for that (I found it on these very forums [Thanks, ReMark]) but it is tedious.

My question is: Does anyone know how to make Trueview become less jerky? Or even a nice guy?

Buy a copy of CADwizz. It is a relatively cheap DWG viewer with a built in ability to do a "save as" to previous file formats.

Isn't that Autodesk's DWG launcher that changes the "opens with" from AutoCAD to DWGTrue view? My understanding of the launcher is that it remembers the last AutoDesk product used to open a drawing file.

I did have a similar problem with drawing association & opens with. The fix in my case was opening AutoCAD and simply saving the drawing. That updated the drawing launcher so it reassociated the drawing file to AutoCAD

Did you try this? What was your fix?

jammie,

My fix was to right click a CAD file and "Open With" AutoCAD and I make sure I set that as default for these file types. Then I have to go into Windows and mess around in the folder/file options.

I supect that if you're using LT 2008 you still have it on the same workstation you installed it on back in 2008. In that case the spec may not meet the requirements for TrueView and the display/video drivers are the cause.

This is not an issue with Trueview, it is an OS issue. Having multiple versions of AutoCAD, plus Trueview, that change around once a year, I usually open files from within the program that I want to view them in.

Murph_map & RobDraw,

I don't understand what either on of you is saying. Here's what happens:

I get later versions of AutoCAD files from customers ('09 & up)

I open those files in Trueview and then convert them down to '08

Trueview then becomes default program for DXFs and DWGs

I right click on any DXF or DWG and tell it to "Open With" and make AutoCAD LT 2008 to be the default program

If I am to open any other DXF or DWG by double clicking on them the file will open in a secondary AutoCAD (it launches AutoCAD again)

I then have to go into "Folder Options" in windows then go to "File Types" and adjust the settings for DWG & DXF files.

Here's a translation. If I have multiple versins of a software, I don't open files using double click. I open them from within the version that I want to view them in.

Ah. You're not a double-clicker then. I'm a fan of the double-clickedness.

I suppose you could configure your OS for double click opening but that would need to be reconfigured every time you get new software. That is why I trained myself and others to open from within the program or use the right click options properly.

My reply refers to your work station (PC) and the older operating sysem and spec. It may be ok for ACA LT 2008 but with TrueView 2012/13 its a little low on RAM and outdated video card/drivers. Trueview needs almost as much power to run as the full versions of AutoCAD. Your computer specs in your profile says XP for the OS and less than 2 gb ram which is on the low side for 2012/13 CAD. That may be why you're seeing the jerkiness.

Trueview does stay as a default after it is used, but the "fix" is to simply go to your AutoCAD icon (as in your desktop) and open AutoCAD from it.

This restores your default to AutoCAD.

My philosophy too. It is such an obvious solution that one wonders why more people just don't follow it and avoid the hassle.

It may be how you are opening the drawings to convert - I've not had trouble using this approach:

I don't open the drawing in DwgTrueView.

I'll start DTV from my desktop shortcut without a drawing then from the DTV menu I'll select convert. From there you can navigate to your file location and select multiple files then convert. The files never "open" in DTV and there is never a file type reassociation.
