Mondi Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 How can I change the opacity of a single object in AutoCAD 2008? Quote
Dadgad Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Welcome to the forum. After you select it, look on the PROPERTIES palette you can change it there. Quote
Blackfish Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I'm afraid that the transparency of objects and layers was introduce in :acad:2011 release Quote
JD Mather Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I'm afraid that the transparency of objects and layers was introduce in :acad:2011 release I used transparent objects in AutoCAD long before 2011. I'm thinking something like r2000 or 2000i Quote
ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 AutoCAD 2000 commands. TRANSPARENCY Controls whether background pixels in an image are transparent or opaque. I don't believe the user could control the transparency of a single object in AutoCAD 2000. One could, however, use a material to create semi-opaque (transparent) surfaces in AutoCAD 2000. Quote
JD Mather Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 AutoCAD 2000 commands. TRANSPARENCY Controls whether background pixels in an image are transparent or opaque. Don't know why that came up other than I said I used transparent objects (not that command). To elaborate - applied a transparent Material (seem to remember something like rmat) to part. There was an Option to display as transparent all the time (this was a "big" deal at the time) but it only looked usable, not the same quality as doing a full Render. Been a few years since I have done anything like this, but my memory hasn't gone that bad. Quote
ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Maybe if the OP can provide an image or a DWG file we'll have a better idea of what he is talking about. I'm not sure if we are even talking about a rendering to be honest. Quote
JD Mather Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I wasn't referring to Rendering, normal view of solids where one or more is (semi) transparent. There should be a rule here that a file the illustrates problem be included with every question. If a picture is worth a thousand words.... a file must be worth at least 20 back-and-forth questions and responses here. I just realized Mondi's first post and no interaction. We seem to be talking to ourselves. Quote
ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I talk to myself all the time. I still don't think that a single 3D object, out of a group, could be made semi-transparent in AutoCAD 2000 but without loading the program, which I do have, I cannot verify it. Quote
ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 SLW210: Don't you have 2000 up and running somewhere? I bet you could answer this question for us. Quote

Well that part was just a guess, I think it was actually 2000i, but in any case the OP is using 2008 and I am quite certain that it was in 2008 as I haven't really used AutoCAD since r2007 and I know it existed before that benchmark release. ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 I get the impression the OP doesn't care about the subject any more and here we are going back and forth about it. I think the joke is on us! I think I'll go outside and check on how my strawberries are doing. Quote
SLW210 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Yes, I have 2000i up and running at home, will check this evening. Quote
Mondi Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 Hey guys, sorry about deleting the post and later I wasn't able to reach the computer. Here's a picture of my problem. I want this blue surface (sea) to be transparent so I can se the whole construction. Thank you for your answers. Maybe the only solution is to get AutoCAD 2011? Or deal with the materials? I'm new in 3d so I'll have to do a little research about it. Quote
ReMark Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 If you haven't applied a material and rendered the objects I don't think you'll get the result you are looking for. That's just my personal opinion. No offense is intended. Quote
JD Mather Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 (edited) Maybe the only solution is to get AutoCAD 2011? Or deal with the materials? 2011 is no different. You can do this in 2008 (and earlier). Read help screen on materials, toolpallets, options. Also look into X-ray visual style, but that isn't really what I was talking about with a transparent material. Someone will come along and post the relevant screen shots if you don't figure it out on your own. Update: well I just experimented a bit and I can't get it to work in 2012 (unless I render). X-ray does work but applies to all. But as I recall the Option to have transparency on was to go to Options>System tab>Performance Settings and uncheck Transparency (this sounds opposite of what you should do - but read the instructions why you are unchecking). ReMark Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 From the "Between the Lines" blog of Shaan Hurley. "In AutoCAD 2011, we added a new object property called “Transparency.” This is just like other object properties, such as Color/ Linetype/ Lineweight etc, and has ByLayer/ ByBlock/ Transparency value (0-90%) settings available. The purpose of Transparency is to make objects transparent so that you can see through objects underneath when they’re overlapping each other." Quote
