How to change google map elevations for proposed site plan to build off of

I have a finished 2D autocad drawing but I want to use the proposed elevations and change the ones in the google maps import. What is the easiest way to do this? Does Civil 3D have it built in?

Civil 3D does have it built in.

If your using the menu bar (i.e. pull-down menu's) go to File>Import>Google Earth Surface...

If you use the Ribbon go to the Insert tab and use the Google Earth Import from there. By default it is the first set of tools on the Insert tab. See image below.

You have to have Google Earth open and make sure that you only have the area you are concerned with within the Google Earth view. Otherwise you may get much more than you want. Typically it is good to have more surface area than you need but not overly so.

He is using Civil3D 2010, is it included with that version?

That will give him a flat image.

He will need "IMPORTGEMESH"

Instruction can be found at Autodesk Labs. SEE THIS

I have civil 3D 2012 here at school. I know there are several ways to import the terrain with contours, but my question is to edit these elevations for a proposed land schematic. I want to do this with the easiest way there is.

Also, I hear google sketchup has some commands that will help with this. Anyone familiar with that? Thanks for all the help.

You're talking about grading for a proposed or new site. That is another animal all together. Look into grading in Civil 3D. I have never used Google Sketchup so I cannot give any advice about that.

I don't need to show the cut and fills, or the volumes of each. So grading I dont think is what I'm looking for. I'm simply looking to change contour elevations in 3D to match my proposed elevations in my 2D drawing. The reason for this is that the land wasnt completely flat, and the project requires us to build parking lots, shops, etc, and still allow the necessary water runoff. We had a drawing of existing conditions in 2D, and we then altered the elevations in our proposed schematic. I now want to create the new surface in 3D.

Just use the Mesh option. The link to the instructions for 2012 are in the link I posted.

You will need to edit the current surface you have imported. Create a surface style that has points and triangles displayed. You can then edit the points elevations to get the desired results. Select the surface and the Edit Surface context tab will appear in the ribbon.

The instructions that SLW210 provided are already built into Civil 3D. If you do want to Publish to Google Earth that is available as well in the Output tab. (See image below.)

This ability has been available since Civil 3D 2009 at least. I believe the extension is for versions of AutoCad that do not have it built in.

This seems like the hardest part of the entire project. Getting the surface in 3D I want to build from. I blame the uni for not having classes for CE's regarding AutoCAD, then expect us to do the entire senior project based off of it.

The instructions I posted are good for for Civil3D also. It isn't that complicated in AutoCAD, should be easier in Civil 3D.

Here are the 2010 help file tutorials SEE THIS

I looked at those tutorials. I think I'm better off creating my own TIN then draping the image over my new contours, rather then trying to edit the ones from google earth, correct?

Depends on which are more accurate. I would think, the ones you create should be better.

Oh okay I see what you mean now.

I wasn't taking into consideration the instructions. I was thinking strictly in the sense of the commands which are built in to Civil 3D.

My bad.
