Autocad 3D Newb! How to take a simple measurement...

Hi all,

I have not really used Autocad 3D much although I do use Inventor quite a bit. I have a simple question for you, how can I take simple measurements from the pipes on the image? Diameter, radius of bends etc? Is there a tutuorial anywhere regarding taking measurements? I realise I can export the pipe into Inventor and do it that way but I would rather learn how this is done in CAD.

Any ideas?

maybe a couple of other ways - but you might as well create a 2D drawing and dimension what you need.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you are trying to do...However, vanilla AutoCAD has a distance command (DI) and object snaps (OSNAP such as QUA, CEN, END, MID, etc.) that can be used to quickly give the user information regarding distances. Additionally, the attributes or listing the element will often provide information about the object (diameter, length, radius) depending on how the object was created.

Hope this helps. If not, I probably did not understand. Good luck!

You mean export the 3D solid item I am looking at into a 2D drawing so I can dimension that way? What's the easiest way to do this? In Inventor it's simple as I can create front/back/rear views etc. not sure in Autocad....

List does not seem to give me the diameter??? The ID command is good for the lengths etc...

_MEASUREGEOM seems to be the command I am looking for! Helps if you enter 3D Workspace! Doh!

You can't get this drawing into Inventor?

How come Design Review does not have the same measuring capabilites as Autocad, or am I missing something?

No, it's too complex. I did try and import it into Inventor by exporting seperate .sat files but the model was so slow it was pointless. Also, when I tried to convert this model to edrawings it crashes.

I need to hand this model over to a client next week with free viewing software. So far I will be giving them the model in Design Review & Navisworks Freedom, I will of course advise them to purchase an Autocad liscence. I was hoping to convert this into a free viewer which would allow them to take simple measurements, lengths, diameters of pipes etc. edrawings would have been the perfect solution....

See here, when I select to measure radius of 3D object, I can't seem to select the circ. of the 3D pipe, it's like it's breaking this down into sections, see pic....

EDIT: Navisworks freedom also doesn't seem to grasp measuring the diameter either....

See how easy this is in edrawings..... You just select the pipe and voila!

I'm not sure going the 3D to 2D route is the wisest thing to do.

I remember one viewing program that used to be quite good (lots of features) called Myriad. Not sure if it is still around. I think the company that made it was called Infomatics.

I did try Myriad but the program will not open my dwg file, it just hangs and then crashes :(

Can't for the life of me see why Autocad cannot include 3D measure for Dia/rad in their free viewer!
