I am not sure if this is where I post a question or what. So far this site doesn't seem to beginner friendly. trying to fillet a corner don't know where to start. Don't know what a Tag or a thread is.

1) You're in the right section.

2) A "Thread" is a topic.... a series of replies that are all related. Your message is the first in this "thread", mine is the 3rd in the "thread"

3) "Tags" are basically keywords to link related topics, don't worry about them for now.

4) If you hover over the FILLET tool, AutoCAD should pop up tips on how to use the tool. You can also type FILLET at the command line.

Sorry you are not finding it beginner friendly, most of us try but there are a few grumps everywhere you go. :) And welcome and congrats on your first post.

You simply use the FILLET command, type that at the command line or use the Ribbon, Home, Modify, Fillet.

rkent,

Just a little upset with myself for not getting this. I have the book, Autocad 2011. I am reading the fillets page and when I try it nothing happens. Iknow that if I don't put in a radius it looks like nothing happens but I don't know how to put in a radius. I type in (R on the command line) nothing. Getting frustrated.

Posted

Should be, at command line.

Fillet, enter (or space bar), R, enter, 2 (or whatever value you need), enter, now pick a line, now pick another line.

Posted

Type FILLET

Type "R"

Enter the radius

Pick the two objects to fillet

Here's a demo... hope it helps

If it still isn't working, see if the command line shows you any errors, like "Can not fillet this objects" or "Can not fillet, lines are non-coplanar"

It's not just beginners, we try to growl at everyone equally.

Seriously, I'm sorry you got that impression. Everyone is welcome, and like with any group of people, some days someone will be in a bad mood or some attempt at humor will torque somebody off. I've been growled at, and have occasionally growled at someone else. Most of us behave ourselves 99% of the time.

Jump in anytime, we don't bite very hard.

As to your problem, the command line sequence should look something like this:

Command: f

FILLET

Current settings: Mode = TRIM, Radius = 0.0000

Select first object or [undo/Polyline/Radius/Trim/Multiple]: r

Specify fillet radius : .375

Select first object or [undo/Polyline/Radius/Trim/Multiple]:

Select second object or shift-select to apply corner:

You enter the text you see highlighted here in bold italics.

Thanks Jack. I finally got it. I was suprised because I had been trying so long with no sucess. Now I am trying to do the chamfer. I can make it complete a regular corner but when I try to do an angle NOTHING. Does it change a regular completed rectangle or do you have to leave the corner open and let it put in the angle? The book says something about d1 and d2 which means nothing to me. I wish the book would make an example with sample #'s and degrees.

Thanks to you I finally got it. Now I am trying to do a angle chamfer. I can complete a 90 degree corner but no luck with the angle. I keep putting in 45 for the degree's and nothing happens. Do you make a complete rectangle and then change the corners? I am confused. The book says d1 and d2 which I don't get. I know they want values for each leg of the corner but do they want d1 then the #?

Yes the rectangle or lines, etc have to be drawn first, this is a modify command so the objects have to exist before they can be modified.

Do you have the command line showing in your AutoCAD setup? Very important for beginners to have that up and to look at it while working.

With the chamfer command you first set up the distances for the chamfer. The command sequence will be:

Chamfer, enter, D, enter, first distance (d1), enter, second distance (d2), enter, pick a line, pick another line.

For a known angle you would do

Chamfer, enter, A, enter, first distance (d1), enter, Angle, enter, pick a line, pick another line.

Watch the command line, it will show the options within the command. If you have set the distances already then you just start the command and pick two lines (plines, etc).

I hope that helps.

Sorry guys, been off working on a remodel all day. Just got back to my comfy chair. Did you get the chamfer to work apowersite? Rkent's instructions should be all you need.

Anyone who can answer this stupid question from a beginner. I punched some wrong button and made the ribbon go away. Now try as I will I can't make it come back.

Autocad 2011 student version.

Type in "ribbon" on the command line, it should come back

Just not sure about one thing. All instructions say "first distance (d1)" Does that mean (example) d1 2 enter d2 3.5 enter? In other words do I write (d1) before the distance or just the distance? So far nothing works.

Jack,

Thanks I will try that. Nothing else I have tried works.

Right I am not sure I am smarter than a pig but I sure am getting annoyed.

No, just enter the distance. Those values will come off the corner you are trying to chamfer. For example, lets say you are looking at a rectangle and are trying to chamfer the upper right hand corner. If you enter .375 for d1 and .5 for d2 and then pick the top and the right side in that order, it will look like this:

The command sequence to do that looks like this:

Command: chamfer

(TRIM mode) Current chamfer Dist1 = 0.0000, Dist2 = 0.0000

Select first line or [undo/Polyline/Distance/Angle/Trim/mEthod/Multiple]: d

Specify first chamfer distance : .375

Specify second chamfer distance : .5

Select first line or [undo/Polyline/Distance/Angle/Trim/mEthod/Multiple]: [picked the top]

Select second line or shift-select to apply corner: [picked the right side]
