Patrick Hughes Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Four people in this thread have already updated their profile and it looks very good. What does the OP think? I think it looks great. Regarding compulsory or optional I would lean towards optional as well. Maybe a comment in the profile area informing the user it might be of value in providing more concise answers to their questions. Quote

Patrick Hughes Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 That's what I have done  I should have paid more attention when I filled my info out. Nicely done. Thank you. Quote
tzframpton Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) I think it's a really good idea. I've now updated my own to reflect my specific designing trade and skill. *EDIT* After thinking about it some more, this is such a great idea because the details given can allow people to connect with others about really specific topics. Just stating once again how beneficial this new Profile feature is in my opinion. This should be an announcement, to inform everyone globally about this new feature. Tyke Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Would it be possible to search for people in a certain discipline and display a list of those members? Quote
CADTutor Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Would it be possible to search for people in a certain discipline and display a list of those members? Yes. Community>Members List>Search Members>Advanced Search>Discipline>Search Now Give it a go, works a treat. Quote

I don't believe an idea of mine has ever garnered such enthusiasm. I must do something to keep my head from swelling. Usually its swollen from having been beat upon. That search idea is an awesome addition although I must confess I've not tried it as yet. Quote

Tyke Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 My discipline says Other because I never know what's going to land on my desk overnight. LOL Maybe there should be an option for "Varies". LOL @ David: As Mark said he does several disciplines and that's true for me too, would it be possible to have multiple entries rather than being restricted to one or just entering "other", which sometimes can be more misleading than helpful? "Other" is required for specialist cases. Quote
CADTutor Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Hmm, so you'd like to move the goalposts? I think the original concept is correct, that there is just a single primary discipline and more detail can be given in the details section. However, I understand where you're coming from and the "Other" option may not be applicable for those who are multi-disciplinary rather than are in a discipline that doesn't appear on the list. So, how about we have an additional option that says "Multi-disciplinary", which requires that the member also add some detail before it will appear in the postbit. So it acts just like "Other" but rather than saying "See details..." in the postbit, it says "Multi-disciplinary". Does that seem sensible? Quote
amarcon Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Coming in late... I like the concept, great tool for the 'answerers' amongst you To add my 2 cents, for discipline options I'd really like to see: 'Structural' - I worked in Structural Engineering for 25 years. They may graduate with a Civil Engineering degree (in AUS) but many will never practice anything other than structural (building) design. Out here Civil is primarily road, sewer, stormwater et al excluding structures! 'Building" - many a CAD user are drawing things from pools to fences to cabinets that really are outside of pure Architecture. 'Manufacture' - my company manufactures precast panels and structural steelwork, for many disciplines - Civil, Architecture, Mech, Electrical etc. No pigeon hole! 'Detailer' - I think this generic one suits a lot of small office that will draw anything that pays. Also the subbies that may be purely shop detailing items. Quote

I've added "Structural", "Construction" (Building) and "Manufacture" to the list of options. 'Detailer' - I think this generic one suits a lot of small office that will draw anything that pays. Also the subbies that may be purely shop detailing items. "Detailer" isn't a discipline, it's an occupation and there is a separate field specifically for occupation. However, it raises another issue, which is whether we should add the "occupation" field to the pop-up. I've also added "Multi-disciplinary" to the list but have not made this conditional upon added detail. Whereas "Other" could mean anything and requires additional detail, "Multi-disciplinary" does actually have a meaning and so it is up to the member to add detail if they want to. Quote
CADTutor Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 OK, I've now added a member's occupation to the Discipline pop-up. I believe that makes sense and gives the full picture. So, in the example below, ReMark no longer needs to include discipline details in the occupation field, "CAD Draftsman/Designer" would be enough. And, given the range of disciplines he's involved with, the new "Multi-disciplinary" option would make more sense than "Other", which is intended to cover any disciplines not already in the list. I've added some logic to this. The pop-up will appear if either Occupation or Details are included with Discipline, unless the discipline is "Other", in which case, Details must be included. As far as I'm concerned, this hack is now feature-complete and I aim to work some similar magic with the "Using" (software) information. Any final comments on Discipline welcome. Quote

David, would it make sense to have room to include a CV and school details? Only joking I didn't really mean it. Seriously, I think that its great and am just now curious to see how many people use it. Many thanks David for all your work on this. Quote
