Can you create a mechanical drawing from a 3d drawing?

yeah, Inventor is a whole new learning curve. Something to consider, though. Here are the original 2d in pdf.

Awsome. Are you planning on building an exact scale Tigermoth from your plans? Reason I asked is, the 3D has full scale cockpit details that are not present in the 2D pdf's, and as an old model plane builder, I'd be interested in seeing the final results someday.

PS What is the oil tank for, smoke trails? Gotta be, I see what looks like an electric motor behind that prop. OOPS - off topic again.

I believe I know exactly what happened. You used FLATSHOT in the orientation pictured above (an isometric view). If you switch to a Top down view do the images appear more like you imagined they would?

FLATSHOT should be used in the orientation you wish to see your final 2D block. You should have been looking at your part in a Top view.

Yeah, the lower right projection is what I got with Flatshot when in view/3d views/top.

Yes, I plan on putting as much detail into it as I possibly can. As far as exact scale, I only know the basic dementions of the full scale, and have done the rest by looking at pictures and giving it my best quess.(part of the reason I have to make so many updates from changes.) The oil tank is accurate to the real Tiger Moth. I'd be more than happy to send you a copy of the finished plans if you like. Assuming I ever get it done.:)

Sorry, but I do not think that was the orientation you were in when you used FLATSHOT. I purposely reproduced a version of your part and used FLATSHOT in a top view on it and it looked like a true 2D top view. Yours looks like it is still slightly askew. Try again.

Nope, still comes out askew.:x

I'm sure I'm missing something basic. All the more reason to get frustrated. Feel free to slap me around. LOL

That's an awesome tutorial. But my part in a top down view has a perspective look to it, unlike yours. :?

O.K., I figured it out. In visual styles manager, you must be in 2d wireframe or 3d hidden. I was in realistic. Does that sound right to you?

I was too late getting back to the thread. I just realized what you were doing too.... you were in a visual style that had Perspective turned on. Yes, stay only in the 2D visual style when you use FLATSHOT to maintain a true orthographic view. This will produce the accurate results you are after.

Now I'm confused again...after going back into realistic, it works the way yours did. :glare:

That's probably because when you switched to 2D Wireframe, it went back to parallel. You should be able to get parallel or perspective in any of your visual styles. Try PERSPECTIVE from the command line,

Yep, that works, too. Zero for non-perspective, One for perspective. Thanks for all the help, guys. And your patience!:D

Stay in 2D.

I've only ever dabbled with flatshot for making 2D blocks from my 3D parts. I never payed attention to the visual style, I may have to check them for accuracy. I have noticed that stuff that I thought should have been arcs or polylines are often splines.

Hmmmm. Maybe it is disinformation. The real purpose for the "Oil" tank (wink wink nudge nudge) is still top secret.

Thanks for the offer on the plans but my poor old arthritic fingers barely let me type these days. Too many years gripping an exacto knife way too tightly, I guess. I don't have any intention to build these days, I am just interested. Besides, all my money is tied up in a supercharger for my Mustang (Not the P51, the S197)

Did you know that the Tigermoth was one of the first planes with swept wings to ever see combat? Man, them Dehaviland boys was geniuses, they was. Ya wanna build a bomber outa WHAT? Wood, you say? Ya wanna put TWO Merlins in it? Ya wanna name it after an annoying bug? Buwaaahaahaahaa, sure you do that why dontcha.

awright you people, get back on topic.

I'm curious how you hang on to that supercharged S197 steering wheel with those hands! lol

K, off topic is done. Thread is done. Thank you and good night!

Cuz the rearend is still stock and the supercharger is waiting under my drafting table for the rear suspension upgrades. 433 hp and I can't get it to the pavement using Ford's example of a rear suspension. The adjustable 4 link rear suspension is happening later this summer. I may have to invest in some one piece seats so I won't be left hangin from the wheel.

Whoever said a midlife crisis is a bad thing is nuts.

OK temporary hijack is over.
