Bell Tower

Here's something I did for work recently.

Modeled and rendered in Studio Max with Mental Ray.

This was a project for a client who wanted a bell tower in their cemetery. So I designed it as I was modeling it. Contractors are bidding the job right now.

What was the inspiration behind the ironwork? Kind of reminds me of the New York Botanical Gardens conservatory. Very nice job.

Thanks guys. :D

The inspiration was a mixture of things. I had a basic, rough idea of what the client wanted, but nothing specific, so I just started browsing Google images and found some things I liked, (Photos of missions, greenhouses, conservatory's, bell towers, etc.), and of course my boss had some input also. I didn't really have a lot of time to sit and work out a full design concept, so it was all pretty much just designed and modeled on the fly. The client loved it though and immediately approved it and requested construction documents for it. So everyone was happy. :)

I can't wait to see the structure when it's completed.

That is really cool! If you can, it would really be interesting to see pics of the completed structure along side your render. Did they give you an idea of when it might be finished?

The grass and plantings are excellent. I like the accent tile insert on the columns. The iron work looks very good as well. I don't think a that there is tree is made that looks totally real in CG. The ones in the background look good, just a bit too even bottom height. Here in SE Virginia, you see that at the edge of a forested area 'cause that's the height the deer can reach. Very nice work! -David

Thanks David. :)

Yes, I agree with you about 3D plants and trees. They just never look very good, so whenever possible, I try to use photo images instead. But I like the shadows I get from the 3D trees. I'm still looking for a way to get the best of both worlds. I'm thinking next time maybe I will try to use the 3D trees as placeholders, to generate shadows, and then replace them with photo images in Photoshop.

I made a 3D Tree program just for fun. Interesting project. Not the best results. Good Luck -David
