gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Hi, I've recently upgraded from AutoCAD 2008 to AutoCAD 2011. I'm creating a drawing from scratch and attaching an xref that I also created. When I attached the xref, the layers from the attached drawing are present within the layer manager; all layers are on and not frozen. However, there is no trace of this in model space, zoom extents results in a blank screen; select all show's no grips of any obscure objects. I'm at a bit of a loss, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Gman AutoCAD 2011 Windows XP Professional Quote
danellis Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Few quick obvious things to eliminate: I assume the xref contains objects!? Is the layer that the xref is inserted on on and thawed? Are there any other objects in your model (main drawing). If these are significantly larger than, or distant from, the objects in your xref, that could make the xref appear to not be there. Similarly are there any objects in the xref particularly distant from the other objects? dJE Quote
gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 thanks for the prompt reply, in response to your queries: the xref is made up objects. all layers are on, and none are thawed. this is a brand new drawing, the xref is the first element to be added to it. zoom extents would address any scale issues, since this is the only element, zoom extents should display the xref in it's entirety. this is why I’m at a loss Quote
gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Unfortunatley, due to the content I am unable to upload the specific drawings. I have purged & audited bnoth the xref and the host drawing but everything checks out. Quote
tzframpton Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Understood. Have you simply created two random files and XREF'ed one into the other just for testing purposes to try and narrow down possible issues? Quote
gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Yeah, this worked fine, although the xref did come in with the layers being displayed an a different colour from what was originally set - layer manager showed layer as originally set-up also. but can live with that. xrefs being used are clean and worked fine within AutoCAD 2008, 2011 finds no issues with both files independently, I have also tried again, created both from scratch and performing all my usual housekeeping tasks prior to bringing in the xref. still no joy - really stumped with this one, given my familiarity with 2011 I wasn’t sure if there was a feature responsible for this. tzframpton Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 What is your VISRETAIN variable set at? Also, are you using an absolute blank template from AutoCAD, or an existing "in-house blank template" created by you/your company? There could be some visual settings preset in the DWT file if this is the case. Are you using AutoCAD 2011? Or a vertical product, such as AutoCAD Architecture 2011? These applications have an added Display Manager that can automatically represent layers and other entities as different colors and other layer settings. Quote
gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 visretain is set to 1 (not familiar with this setting) I am starting with an in house template, however - I am deleting all tabs, selecting layer 0, and then purging the drawing creating a blank, the only other set variables that I am aware of are the psltscale and msltscale that are specific to the drawing template. these are both set to 1, but shouldn’t affect what I’m doing. Just as a note - when running 2008, I would use the exact same method which worked fine. I am running AutoCAD 2011 full version, no front-end apps running on top of it Quote
tzframpton Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I'm at a loss then. I would have to see the files to go any further. Maybe someone else of higher experience than I knows more about this issue on this board. Hope you get this worked out, let us know if you do. Quote
gman1979 Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 cheers, will do, thanks for all your help with this Quote
rkent Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Could be as simple as changing XDWGFADECTL to 0 or 10. Maybe the background color you use matches the color of the xref when xdwgfadectl is applied. Also, occasionally I will xref while in a layout tab so my model ends up in paper space. I have used AutoCAD for 22 years and still make that mistake every so often. More unusual but it happens is when the 3dclip, front and back planes are on and the front and back clip is set where nothing would show. Quote
