Anyay after finally drawing a title block I now have a scaling problem but that can wait. the first problem are these black rectangles, what are they and how can i get them gone? Quote

ReMark Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 AutoCAD on a Mac? Does you system meet the minimum system requirements as called for by AutoDesk? Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Looks like insufficient ram or video ram to me. How long has it been since you did a cold reboot? It's amazing what a difference that can make. Quote
BlackBox Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 AutoCAD on a Mac? Yes, I Beta tested this software last year - AutoCAD "Sledgehammer" they called it . Does you system meet the minimum system requirements as called for by AutoDesk? *IF* not, AutoCAD for Mac will not be kind to the user. If all requirements are not met, symptoms such as sever lag time for mouse movement can be expected... for starters . Quote
ReMark Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 It was nicknamed Sledgehammer because that's the tool you needed to use to get AutoCAD for Mac to work properly on one's computer. LOL Quote
tails Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 I have a feeling you might be on to something it is a imac 21" and I reckon it has 2gb of RAM. I'll confirm tomorrow at work. To be fair the whole computer is in need of a fresh OS install minimum. Thanks for your help. Why would the black shapes show up in a viewport if it was lag? Quote

To be fair the whole computer is in need of a fresh OS install minimum. Thanks for your help. Why would the black shapes show up in a viewport if it was lag? Computers do wierd things when they run short on memory. The black shapes are your machine's way of saying, "uh....what?" Apple's website says the new 21" imac has a ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory and 4 gb of ram. Three gig is the minimum AutoCAD needs, so you're probably ok there if it has 4gb. It's the 256mb of video ram that's probably causing your problem. I know there are people here that will say differently, and swear and "be danged" that it doesn't help, but I will tell you from personal experience that there's no such thing as enough ram or video ram. You can have the biggest, fastest hard drive in the world, the fastest access solid state drive made and the best processor that money can buy, but if you can't get the information to the screen, it doesn't matter. I don't know much about macs, but if you could swap that card out for one with 512, or even a gig, I really think you'd see a big difference in performance. Back in the stone age when a gigabyte of ram cost multiple thousands of dollars, ok, you had to justify it long term (months or even years). These days, (for pc's, anyway) 8 gb can be had for just over $100, and will pay for itself in a matter of days. Graphics cards with a gig of memory start in the $150 range, so why not ramp it up? This is of course assuming your system will support it all, but if it will, and with the payback so short term, I just don't understand why companies will scrimp on stuff like that. Ok, enough ranting and on with the show. Quote
tails Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 It has enough RAM, so other than Jack's explanation I'm a bit stumped. I really thought simple 2D autoCAD would not cause and problems. I've even run AC on a netbook with no probs. Quote
ReMark Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) Maybe its a driver related issue. What are the full specs on this computer? Recommended system specs from AutoDesk for running AutoCAD for Mac can be found here. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=15435044 Edited January 25, 2011 by ReMark Quote

I generally have my email client going, and if the customer sent his drawings to me in pdf then the reader is running too. Quite often I have my webbrowser open, sometimes excel or word or both, and anywhere from 2 to 10 autocad drawings all at the same time. And of course, the ever vigilant antivirus...it all begins to add up after a while. Quote

If you do not have more than 2GB of RAM then that is not enough according to AutoDesk. Show yor boss or IT the specs and tell them those are the minimums for MAC and the Recommended would be better. Maybe its a driver related issue. What are the full specs on this computer? Quote
