Sébastien1985 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I just want to put the metric dimension and I would like AutoCAD calculate for inch. How can I do this ??? Thanks Quote
CyberAngel Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 If you're using an actual dimension, you can modify the style to "display alternate units." I don't see anything but text here, so it's hard to tell what type of object you're working with. Quote
ReMark Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 It can be done using a customized dimension style. The alternate units would be shown with brackets at either end. To do it with text I think would require a lisp routine to handle the conversion from metric to imperial. Quote
SLW210 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Why are you using text for dimensions? Have you tried using dimensions with alternate units? Quote
Sébastien1985 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 it is possible have dimension on 1 layer and alternate on other layer ?? Quote
SLW210 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Not sure about 2007, but in 2011 you can convert dimension to text and have seperate colors for each, I believe this option was available in 2008, I am not sure how you would put them on seperate layers, you might try searching for a lisp. I do not believe you can have words in the same text on different layers either. So my question still goes un answered Why are you using text for dimensions? Have you tried using dimensions with alternate units? Quote
Jack_O'neill Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 You can change have your text be one color, your dimension line another, and the extension lines be a third color. You can have different arrowheads if you want, but I don't know of any way to put the different bits on different layers. Correct me if I'm wrong here guys, but AutoCAD sees everything in a dimension essentially as one entitity. Quote

[ATTACH']25864[/ATTACH] It also sees a block as one entity, yet you can have differrent layers inside a block, which leads me to believe this might could be accomplished with dynamic blocks. Perhaps someone with more time can work on something. I will try to relook at this when I have more time. So, basically I would like to know why it needs to be on seperate layers, before spending time on this. Quote

True, but I'm not sure what the tie in between dynamic blocks and dimensions is. If someone figures out how to do this, I would really like to know how to do it as well. Not that I'd ever want to do it in practice (not sure why anyone would) but it would be interesting! Quote
SLW210 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I didn't say it would be easy, seems like I worked on something using dimensions and dynamic blocks before, you might could search CADTutor, cannot remember who I was helping, but probably would have been in 2008 sometime. Quote
JPlanera Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Seems moot... why put alternate dims on a seperate layer? you want them? turn them on.. you dont want them? turn them off... what the probl'm is???? Quote

I have asked why they need to be text and why they need to be seperate layers and do not have a response. Perhaps there is a reason, if so then we can try to help come up with a solution or alternative. I will not put any more time into this until there is a response. Quote
