instal error autocad 2011 on 64 bit XP SP2

I am trying to install autocad 2011 on a 64 bit XP SP2. Almost as soon as as the settup begins to initailize an error pops up “Cannot update some system components now. Please reboot the machine and try again.” It is the same message for Inventor and Revit. I am using the 64 bit autocad disk for the install.

I hope someone has a fix for this. (please don’t ask why our IT people would use xp and not 7).

Thanks,

Chuck

Sorry, but I have to ask a very obvious question . . . Did you reboot and try again?

Do you have administrative rights on your computer?

No problem - it is often the most obvious that's hardest to see!

I did reboot. I am listed as an administrator on the machine. Our IT person logged on with admin rights got the same message.

Have you closed all other programs?

You may need to temporarily disable any anti-virus software that may be running. This can sometimes disrupt software installation.

One other thing that may help is to do a clean install. Here's instructions: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=2893432&linkID=9240817

good antiviruses like norton, and mc afee, and i forgot which other one DO NOT DISRUPT INSTALLATIONs :why : because the intallations are signed as secure.

restart

right click the installation click properties and in compatability change it to run with support for other service packs.

also you might want to try booting up in safe mode :D and then running the installation,

windows xp are good when working in workstations, easy sharing

A few antivirus programs have been known to disrupt the installation of software. That's why most programs, before they load, prompt the user to shutdown all other programs running in the background before continuing with the installation. While the chances of this happening are pretty small they are still present. As a habit some users will create Restore Points prior to installing new software (a good practice), disconnect from the Internet, then kill all background apps before installing new software. They will even temporarily disable their antivirus programs. Whether or not that is good practice is open to debate.

You should not have to install any program from Safe Mode unless it is an antivirus program.

There are numerous workstations running perfectly fine using Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Now if it were a choice between Vista and XP I for one would choose XP. I've experienced no problems with my Win7 Ultimate 64-bit workstation when it comes to installing software. That includes the installation of AutoCAD 2004 32-bit just to prove it could be done.

I'm not saying that ALL AV programs disrupt installation, but since I don't know which one the OP is using, that could be the problem.

From the link I posted:

Before reinstalling any Autodesk programs

  1. In Windows Explorer, delete the contents of your Windows Temp folder, but do not delete the Windows Temp folder itself. You can locate the Temp folder by entering %TEMP% in the Address bar of Windows Explorer.
  2. Use the End Task feature to end any anti-virus programs.

Note: Disabling anti-virus programs from the system tray may not be sufficient. Virus checking programs may block certain activities that are seen as suspicious (for example, accessing the registry, adding/removing/updating DLL files, and so on), even though these activities are common when installing or removing programs.

Several anti-virus programs can be disabled by right-clicking the taskbar icon and selecting Disable from the shortcut menu. For more information about disabling your anti-virus software, refer to the vendor of that software.

Important! It is important that you not only disable the anti-virus software but also use the End Task feature to end the anti-virus software.

Good antivirus programs will NOT allow you to end there process with task manager just thought yall would like to know

I'll consider myself duly enlightened. Thank you.

Task Manager is not required to shut down an antivirus program. Most "good" ones, as you refer to them, have that feature built in.
