Data extraction Item number

Is any one using this for generating part lists? (http://heidihewett.blogs.com/my_weblog/2007/02/tables_from_dat.html)

I have some problems with it:

• Doesn't generate Item number need to do this by hand.
  
• Can save data extraction plan but can't update the selection set without going true all settings.
  
• Can't select blocks in modelspace if I am in paperspace, where the table should be.
  

Does any one knows a good work around or a way to fix this issues?
