mokstar Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 hey, autocad 2011 lags like crazy on my computer too. It takes about 5 seconds to select an object, trim, etc. thats how bad it is. Im on windows 7 64 bitz. im not familiar with customizing settings on my computer. Please tell me step – by – step how to make autocad run smoothly? thanks.. greatly appreciated. Its driving me nuts. with all the time waiting, i could be 4 times more efficient… Quote
ReMark Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Could you provide more detail on your computer setup? This problem recently came up regarding 2010 too. Refer to this thread: http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?54084-Lagging Quote
rkent Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 From reading about and using AutoCAD with Win7 64 I don't think it is ready for prime time. Autodesk needs to really spend some time getting it to work with 64 bit, but instead they are spending time with the Mac OS instead. I have had some luck turning every bell and whistle Win7 comes with, themes, effects, etc. see also http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?54034-Should-I-be-expecting-better-performance&highlight=speed Quote

Dan911 Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 2011 been running fine on my pc in 2d, but the past several weeks been trying to make the plunge into 3D and it became obvious my pc just can't handle it. DeskTop: OP - Windows XP PRO 32bit SP3 CPU - Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.83GHz Ram - 4 GB (comp shows 3.5) Graphics - Geforce 9400 GT 512mb I know a better video card is needed and my be time to upgrade, but it really bothers me that I draw a simple cube and once I add a visual style I start experiencing problems. I searched the forums and read through most post, but mostly of specs of comps with problems. I think it would be extremly helpful to me and others to see specs of comps that run this program utilizing the 3d capabilities smoothly without any lag. Thanks in Advance, Dan Quote
ReMark Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 My work computer is similar to your desktop but I haven't noticed any real lagging problems running AC 2011. Specs: OS - Windows XP Pro 32-bit SP3 CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz w/1066FSB RAM - 4GB DDR2 800MHz Graphics - nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR3 PCIe HD - 73GB 15,000rpm U3SCSI-320 Mobo - Asus P5B Deluxe Intel P965 The specs under my avatar are for my home computer. Dan911 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Wow very similar, except for the better video card. I suspected that may be my problem and already been researching. Once decided and installed I will post results. Thanks, Dan Quote
ReMark Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 One other thing I do is when I am going to work in 3D I boot my computer using the 3GB switch as documented by both Microsoft and AutoDesk. Quote
Dan911 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I tried that and it didn't help, maybe with a new video card it will. Now I know why there are so many " What video card to buy" post, the choices are endless. I just found a Nvidia Quadro 600 1024MB DDR3 that was very reasonably priced and is on the Autodesk Supported and recommended list. Once purchased and installed will post back. Quote
msimm15 Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 (edited) I am running Autocad 2011 on my laptop and desktop and I have the same problem on both - anytime I copy and paste or do something of the sort the system freezes and does not do anything for a while - literally just stops. Its driving me crazy I cant do any work I am mainly working on drawings in the 2007 format which I am now using in 2010 format. I didnt update the references or any of the other issues the computer prompts me with because it messes up the drawings. The lines end up shifted and misconstrued. Is it possible that 07 drawings create extra lag on the 2010 platform ? Thanks laptop specs: Windows 7 64 Bit i7 820Q Ati Radeon 5850 - 1Gb of Gddr5 ram 7200 rpm 500 Gb HDD 4Gb of 1330 ram Desktop - Windows XP 32 bit Just stock Dell optiplex 760 Edited December 6, 2010 by msimm15 Quote
29xthefun Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 One thing you can do is update all your drivers. New video and motherboard drivers can help performance big time. Also make sure you have no viruses as well as they can hinder performance. Quote
msimm15 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 So it seems its just one file that I have using a lot recently, all the others files are ok. Thanks Quote
ReMark Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 So it seems its just one file that I have using a lot recently, all the others files are ok. Thanks What's the drawing file size? Quote
msimm15 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 rather small - about 4" I dont know why its acting up, I do know it was done in Autocad 2002, I just deleted any unused layers and purged what I could and that helped a lot. Quote
ReMark Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 New to AutoCAD by any chance? By file size I meant how large in KB's is the file itself? Are we talking 100,000+, or 1.2MB or 35MB or what? Any xrefs attached? Quote
msimm15 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 haha doh ! I didnt realize what I wrote - about 4mb how do I check if there are any xref's attached ? - I know there is at least one - I get an error everytime I open the drawing Quote
29xthefun Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 If you type in IMAGE in the command line you will get a list of all items referenced to the drawing. Quote
Blam Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 So it seems its just one file that I have using a lot recently, all the others files are ok. Thanks If it is just one file that is being cantankerous, run an AUDIT on it first. If it still acts up, one thing I always recommend is to wblock out all of the entities you need into a new drawing file. This rebuilds the drawing database and seems to leave anything that is bugging AutoCAD behind. Quote
Raudel Solis Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 do you know how to change the option in which the computer uses more processing power towards programs or background services SWITCH IT TO BACKGROUND SERVICES restart, wait for the computer to fully load all services and then launch autocad right click computer then advanced system settings, a system properties window should appear click on settings under the performance dialog, and then click advanced thats how it is on windows 7 and i think vista too Quote
