Dan22 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Hi, I have been accepted onto a part-time evening City & Guilds Level 2 CAD course commencing in January 2011. Providing the course tutor can get enough people together the course will commence. The program that I will be using on the course will be AutoCAD LT 2011. At the moment I am currently practising some CAD with a program called Draft sight. I will be investing in a customised PC system to connect to my TV for Microsoft Office and CAD (both light 2d and 3d purposes) and light gaming (solely Football Manager 2011 ). I ntend to use CAD for producing floor plans/elevations/section drawings and 3d modelling for house design. Can any of you tell me what is more important for CAD- is it the graphics card or CPU? Would you recommend adding a secondary hard drive to the PC customisation? Below I have detailed the specification options from a company called DinoPC Ltd, who I have visited with regards to the spec and intend to purchase the system from. Also, on option 1, there are also two slots available for extra RAM. Option 1 Customizations: CPU: Intel® Core i3 540 Included Operating System: Microsoft® Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Included Motherboard: Asus P7H55-M Included Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333mhz (2x 2GB) Included Hard Drives: 1TB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s Included Optical Drive: 22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA Included Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 1GB £55.09 Sound card: Onboard 7.1 Audio Included Case: Piano Black ATX Included Warranty: 3 Year Bronze Warranty Included Product Subtotal: £404.09 Option 2 CPU: Intel Core i5 760 Operating System: Microsoft® Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Motherboard: Asus P7H55-M Memory: 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz 4*2GB Hard Drive: 1TB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s Optical drive: Optical Drive: 22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 1GB Case: Piano Black ATX Warranty: 3 Year Bronze Warranty Priority turnaround: Dispatched in 3 working days Total: £556.69 I look forward to your replies. ReMark Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Either system should be fine for AutoCAD LT. I wouldn't know what to do with one terabyte hard drive let alone two. My work system has (2) 76GB SCSI drives. One spins at 15,000 rpm and the other at 10,000 rpm. 4GB of RAM would suffice for LT. No need to go to 8GB unless you plan on upgrading to full AutoCAD in the future and take up doing 3D work. The video card you've specified will be fine for LT as well. Definitely go 64-bit all the way; it's the future. Win7 is a good choice. I prefer Pro or Ultimate but they are a bit more costly. Home Premium is good. Quote
