AutoCAD on tablet PC

Hi all,

I do some survey work and normally sketch on paper and then cad up later.

I'm looking to get a tablet pc and sketch as I go. I've seen various systems around such as sitemaster but as I already have autocad I really want to use that.

Does anyone know if there is a plugin or something for autocad so that when you start a line it give a pop up dialog box or something so you can enter the distances via the touch screen.

I know I could use the windows on screen keyboard but I think it would be a pain to type @0,1500 or whatever it is each time.

I can send a signal from my disto via bluetooth for dims but I need to be able to manually enter them.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

Tablet pc + Autocad = Fail, Why : Because i dont see how you could fit a core 2 duo or a 2ghz or better processor in something of that size without over heating

BUT!

Tablet PC + Windows Paint Program = drafting :D

Apple iPad + AutoCAD WS = WIN

Getting one from the University library where I work to see about using one for field verifications and walk throughs. If it works out I'll see if I can get work to buy one.

https://www.autocadws.com

I have it on my iPod Touch and it works fine for 2D files but the screen is too small

I saw something that I would like to try. I saw it at Staples http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=821305&affixedcode=WW . It is a graphical interface. I don't know how good it would be but they are not so expensive.

What I am using is a BELKIN n52te. It is designed for gamers but the keys on it are totally programable either as individual keys or as macros. In combination with the mouse it is real cool. I use it for AcadElectric but you can do what you want with it.

We have a Timble Tablet PC with Trimble's own software. We use it in conjunction with a robotic total station, GNSS and S6 total stations, not tried it yet with a Disto over Bluetooth but it should work. It takes a little more time in the field but the dwg file that it produces is much more efficiently finished off in AutoCAD and the results are great. We can upload existing dwg and dxf files for setting out purposes or to do further survey work on. We have used LT on a laptop, but that wasn't so successful.

I also have AutoCAD WS on my iphone. As mentioned above, the practical application is somewhat limited due to the small screensize. But I sometimes use it for a quick reference when my papers have gone AWOL somewhere in the workshop :)

Can't wait for the next gen iPad - and for AutoCAD WS to support 3D.

Picked up a loaner iPad from the university (where I work) library yesterday. Not bad with the bigger screen but it might need a stylist with AutoCAD WS. I have a few weeks to kick its tires a bit to see if it is usable.

Mike,

I have almost exactly the same need. If you've found a solution, then PLEASE let me know either here or at brian @ draftingservices . com. If I find a solution, then I'll post here.

I've just begun my search for a solution today. I think getting a tablet that can run AutoCAD in 2D is not a prob. The issue is easily inputting the data. I do floor plan measuring for a living, and use paper and pen for my field notes because it always seemed inconceivable to be able to measure and input the measurements easily. Today I saw Apex Nexus software by which one can input measurements with a tablet pen. That gave me hope. I don't think their software is convertible into AutoCAD format, which is what I ultimately need, so I'm now wondering if someone has a solution for my need?

Sincerely,

Brian

I've used PocketCAD on a PDA for sometime. Works great when in the field.

Might work on a tablet for field input. You might check PocketCAD on the www.

{Hi Mike, you can set autocad to ortho mode using F8 or press the ortho tab at the left bottom of the screen and type in the distance or just press the distance on your disto once you have set the direction you are going in using your finger tip or stylus. if you have a non orthogonal corner you will have to create a distance - distance intersection using circles from different room corners and snap to the intersection, if you have set up your snap settings in advance.

I hope that this is of help You can also use software like sitemaster or a british companies theolt or MBS Software or PenMap which have programs which can work inside AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT to produce building surveys and each have a professional version which can link to a total station to use it as an outside digitiser and then transfer the survey indoors using reflectorless total station measurements.

I've actually been looking into this same scenario myself. Could anyone who has experience of AutoCAD WS shed any light on how they found it and any limitations, etc.? I work as an MEP Engineer on design and build contracts and I'm trying to assess the pros and cons...so far, I've narrowed it down to the advantage of updating one drawing in real-time, as opposed to marking up half-dozen different A0 plans, just to go through it all again once I'm back in the office (or that's how it plays out in my head anyways  )

How does AutoCAD WS perform using fingers on screen instead of keyboard and mouse? Isn't it a hassle to use or have they done a good job to convert to touch? I presume not all features are available?

My initial thought is that I needed a pen to use instead of my finger. No, not all features are there. It is not meant as a real drawing tool but a markup tool with very limited drawing features imho.

I feel awful my first post has to be NO... NO... NO... without exception Ipad+AutoCAD WS or 360 DOES NOT equal a WIN. I use Ipad and used WS, currently 360 simply because it's about the only combination that has a remote chance of being useful. OH the hours of lost data in the cloud... stuck in the Ipad with no chance of getting pulled out... I travel across the country for my job, engineer, I wish either Apple or maker of WS (360) would take at least some financial responsibility for the thousands of dollars lost on multiple projects because that combination is only 85% reliable at best. Whenever data connection is lost so is the work... LOST... LOST... LOST... Sorry... Ipad+WS or(360) = useless. Safest, 100% reliable, costs nothing = pencil, paper, tape measure= win 100% of the time.
